Udalguri: With the 2024 Lok Sabha elections looming, political fervor has gripped Udalguri-Darrang constituency as major parties announce their contenders. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and Indian National Congress (INC) have showcased their nominees, setting the stage for a gripping electoral battle.
Incumbent Mangaldoi Lok Sabha MP Dilip Saikia will represent the BJP, while the BPF has put forward Kalaigaon MLA and seasoned politician Durga Das Boro. Meanwhile, the INC, part of the 15-party United Opposition Forum Assam (UOFA), has nominated former two-time parliamentarian Madhab Chandra Rajbongshi.
The contest is expected to be predominantly between Saikia and Boro, with Saikia leveraging his incumbency and Boro enjoying the backing of the perfume magnate Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which commands influence among Bengali-speaking religious minority voters in Mangaldoi and Dalgaon LAC.
BPF supremo Hagrama Mohillary has affirmed AIUDF's support for BPF in the Darrang-Udalguri Lok Sabha seat. The constituency, formed post-delimitation, comprises 11 Legislative Assembly constituencies spanning four districts. With a total voter count of 2,187,160, including 1,099,294 males and 1,087,847 females, the electorate holds substantial sway in the forthcoming polls.
