Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma Remembered Across Assam on Student Day

KOKRAJHAR: Citizens from various communities, particularly the Bodo community, commemorated the exemplary contributions of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, former president of the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU), on his 68th birth anniversary, celebrated as 'Student Day' across different districts of Assam with a series of day-long events on Sunday.

In Kokrajhar, the central committee of the All Bodo Students Union, in collaboration with the Upendra Nath Brahma Trust (UNBT) and the Kokrajhar district committee of ABSU, convened at Thulungapuri Dotma amidst a massive turnout of public and student representatives. ABSU President Dipen Boro unfurled the union flag, followed by heartfelt floral tributes to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma at his tomb and samadhi sthal.

The event witnessed symbolic gestures towards sustainable peace, including the release of balloons and white pigeons by esteemed guests, alongside sapling plantations symbolizing the spirit of the day. Notable figures paying homage to Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma included Dr. Surath Narzary, President of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, and renowned journalist Rupa Chenoy from Mumbai.

ABSU President Dipen Boro underscored Bodofa's lifelong dedication to the welfare and upliftment of marginalized communities, urging the government to confer upon him the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in recognition of his enduring legacy.

"The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) demands the Bharat Ratna for Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma, a leader revered not only by Bodos but also by students and the underprivileged," stated Dipen Boro, highlighting Bodofa's pivotal role in the Bodoland movement and his vision for a literate society based on the principles of non-violence.

Similar observances took place in Tamulpur, where the Tamulpur district committee of ABSU, in collaboration with local entities, honored Bodofa's memory, with Bodoland Territorial Region's Chief Executive Member Pramod Boro emphasizing the significance of Bodofa's ideals in shaping a brighter future for students.

In recognition of Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma's enduring impact, the Assam government officially declared March 31st as 'Chatra Divosh' (Student Day) across the state, ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire generations.

The commemoration of Bodofa's birth anniversary underscores his indelible mark on Assam's socio-political landscape, reaffirming the commitment to his vision of empowerment and progress for all.

Awareness meeting on witch hunting

A social awareness campaign against the killing of innocent people on the suspicious of witchcraft practice was held on Thursday among the villagers at East Maligaon in Kokrajhar, where Ashinta Basumatary, a college student was killed allegedly after his family members were suspected of practicing black magic. Round table on human rights

NDFB(S) cadre held

A  cadre of NDFB(Songbijit faction) was apprehended by security forces beloinging to police and army from Gossaigaon Tinali yesterday night in a joint search operation in Kokrajhar district.He was identified as Swrang Narzary of Kathalguri Bishmuri,was involved with various cases of extortion,kidnapping and providing logistic supports to the militant outfit organisation.A pistol,two round live bullets were recovered from him.

Illicit liquor seized

At least nine women were apprehended by female constable of SSB of 16th battalion(Bn) for involved  in the smuggling who were trying to evade the international border,besides seized illicit Bhutanese liquor of  Rs 19,665 from Dadgiri and Dholkola in Chirang district on Monday. The women were apprehended during the quick reaction team of SSB after getting input that illicit business of Bhutanese liquor is flourishing in the nearby Indian villages of Indo-Bhutan border and smugglers are taking full advantages of open and porous international border with Bhutan. 16th Bn SSB, on Monday took a prompt action against liquor smugglers and caught them with red handed.  

BPF condemned Padmabil incident

The BPF party strongly condemned and demanded inquiry into killing of Bishnu Boro,who was killed by unidentified miscreants at Padmabil village under Serfanguri PS on May 1 in Kokrajhar district. ABSU, UPP submit memorandum

Student's body recovered, brutally killed

Ashinta Basunatary's body, a college student, who went missing was recovered from Badrampur jungle, on the other hand a man was brutally killed by unidentified miscreants at Padmabil area under Serfanguri PS in Kokrajhar district today. Ashinta Basumatary was allegedly missing from his East Maligaon village since April 22 and his body was recovered from deep jungle nearby Badrampur village after arrested involved persons confessed about situation. Body was recovered on buried condition in the presence of magistrate and police officials. Bodofa UN Brahma remembered

The 26th death anniversary of ‘Bodofa’ Upendra Nath Brahma, who is fondly regarded as “father of the Bodos”, was observed at Tulungapuri, Dotma in Kokrajhar with a day-long programme. The People's Joint Action Committee for Boroland Movement has expelled Jebraram Mushahary, chief convenor of the committee for his anti organisation activity.  Rakesh Boro, chief convener (in-charge) of tgr committee told that the committee took resolution to expelling Mushahary, on it's executive meeting held on April 28 at Udalguri for his allegedly anti organisation activities carried out during shouldering of the organization.
