Sanjoy Hazarika Bereaved

Minal Hazarika wife of Sanjoy Hazarika, noted author, Journalist and Managing Trustee of Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES), passed away on at the Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi on April 3, 2009. She had suffered a stroke at Guwahati on 15 January 2009 and was undergoing treatment at Gangaram Hospital for nearly three months. She was in her fifties and was a well known figure in Assam and in New Delhi. She leaves behind a daughter (Meghna Hazarika) besides her husband. At this hour of grief we pray for the departed soul.

I never knew Mrs. Hazarika personally but I had a telecon with Mr. Hazarika and from what I have read of him and his films I have seen, at this moment my condolences and prayers are with him and his family.

I knew Sanjoy from our St. Edmund's school days in Shillong. Mrs Hazarika's work through C-NES has been an eyeopener for Indians vis-a-vis the North East. This loss is a great setback to propagation of the understanding of the psyche of northeasterners. May her soul rest in peace and may Sanjoy and Meghna have God's blessings to overcome this bereavement.

NIA seeks Mohet in its remand

The National Investigating Agency probing the Mohet Hojai case is seeking remand of the former Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous who was arrested charging him with funding the DHD(J). Taking the first ever case since it was formed, NIA SP on Friday afternoon has moved a petition at the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate Court to this effect and th4 court is expected to take up it on Saturday. Meanwhile, the CJM court on Friday directed the Guwahati district jail authority for production of Mohet Hojai and RH Khan before the court on Saturday following NIA petition seeking 10 day custody of duo.

Arrested Garlosa brought to Guwahati

Two days after he slipped into police dragnet in Bangalore, DHD(J) chairman Jewel Garlosa was brought to Guwahati on Friday.A top level police team led by Central western range DIG G P Singh took away the top terrorist Immediately after he landed at the Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Jewel was taken to an undisclosed location for interrogation in connection with a number of cases. Details are awaited.Notably, a high level police team apprehended Jewel, two of his associates the face of terror in NC hills from a hotel in Bangalore on Wednesday midnight.

HS results: Chayanika tops arts, Manoj science and Bidisha commerce

The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has declared the results of the Higher Secondary examinations of 2009 in science, arts and commerce streams on Tuesday. Chayanika Baruah from Kakojan College of Jorhat tops the arts stream while Bidisha Agrawal of the Guwahati Commerce College Agrawal has topped the commerce. The first position in science stream this year goes to Manoj Swargiary, a private candidate in Barpeta district. The results are will be available at 11 in the morning in all district headquarters. Attack on train in NC hills; 3 injured

Three Assam police personnel sustained injury when DHD(J) rebels again attacked a special security train with bullets in North Cachar hills on Friday.According to information, the incident took place at a round 1 in the afternoon in between Lumding and Langting when the Dimasa rebels sprayed bullets on the train leaving the police personnel injured. Barring security trains, other services have been remaining closed due to continued attack on trains by the DHD(J) rebels.The injured have police personnel have been rushed to the hospital. The incident took place a day after 31 houses were set ablaze on Thursday by some unidentified armed miscreants.

Handique to take oath as cabinet minister

After moments of hectic lobbying in Delhi former minister for chemical and fertilizer and Jorhat MP Bijoy Krishna Handique was inducted in the new Manmohan Singh cabinet on Friday. .According to information, Handique the fourth time MP from upper Assam's Jorhat Lok Sabha seat would take oath of office and secrecy from President Patil at a function at the Ashoka Hall.
