Assam is throbbing with the celebration of the 83 birth day of Asom Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika across the state even as the Dada sahib Phalke award winning film maker is spending the day with the cancer patients undr going treatment in Mumbai along with his fans. Several organization across the state are celebrating the day with his evergreen songs whole the day where lakhs of people are wishing Dr Hazarika a happy birth day. Dr Hazarika is rapidly recovering after his recent by pass heart surgery.
Dr Hazarika in brief: Born in 1926 at Sadiya in Assam, Dr Hazarika foayed into films as a child actor in Jyoti prasad Agarwal's second film Indramalati in 1939. He wrote and sang his first song at the age of 14 beside his extremely brillient academic profile. He passed his matriculation in 1940 and intermediate from Cotton College in Guwahati in 1942, and went on to Banaras Hindu University where he did his B.A. in 1944 and his M.A. in Political Science in 1946. He did his Ph.D. from Columbia University, New York, in 1954 where came in touch with Pol Robson.
He produced and composed music for the internationally famous award winning Hindi feature film Ek Pal in 1986, directed by Kalpana Lajmi, stars. He has been the Producer and Music Composer for Hindi film Rudaali starring Dimple Kapadia, Raj Babbar, Amjad Khan and Rakhi. This was followed by Gayee Manzil Mujhe in 1996.
He has won the President’s National Award for the best filmmaker thrice in 1960, 1964 and 1967. He also won the National Award as best music composer in India in 1977 for the Assamese film Chameli Memsaab. He was awarded the ‘Padamshree’ in the same year for his outstanding contribution. In 1992, he was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievements in cinema. In 2001, he was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Bhushan, one of the highest civilian award. Bhupen Hazariaka, who has directed music in many outstanding Bengali films, is cherished in Dhaka as much as he is in Guwahati.
