Woman urged to protect their rights

The annual session of Kalaigaon Mahila Samiti was observed at Kalaigaon on 27 and 28 March 2010 at Kalaigaon Town LP School premises with gaiety.Kalaigaon Mahila Samiti was formed by Bina Rani Gogoi at a meeting held at Kalaigaon poloice station on January 30 in 1955.The hoisting of Mahila samiti flag by Renu Medhi,president,Kalaigaon Mahila Samiti marked the beginning of the two days programme on March 27 at 8 am followed by homage paying ceremony conducted by Maheswari Devi,advisor of the samiti at 9 am.Sports competitions were arranged on the occasion at 10 am where members of the samiti including elderly ladies participated.The most interesting “Go as you like” competition was was held at 1 pm where Mrinalini Hazarika and Premada Barman (Punjabi couple) won first prize. The second days programme started with spot drawing competition which was conducted by artist Tulika Rabha followed by an exhibition of handicraft and handloom products which was inaugurated by senior woman activist Mira Baruah. A demonstrative “Aai Naam” competition was arranged at 11 am guided by Hemalata Saharia. The open session was held at 2 pm which was presided over by noted woman activist of the state Rani Devi of Mangaldai. Noted singer Dr.Anima Choudhuri attended the open session as the chief guest. On the occasion she said that unless and until women of the society come forward for their own causes,social upliftment process would be hampered.She requested the women of the society to keep vigil against injustice done to women and children of the society. Miran Devi and Runa Devi,joint secretaries of Darrang Zilla Mahila Samiti also addressed the open session. Several distinguished persons namely – social worker Kami Ram Saharia, Mahendra Saikia,Kamal Prasad Sarma,Lohit Nath Amiya Kumar Nath, Citra Patowary etc attended the open session.

Another barn owl has been rescued at Kalaigaon on February 25. According to information one Yasin Ali,inhabitant of No.2 Kalaigaon had found a stranded barn owl near his house at 2 PM and kept it inside his house to be sold in black market. Acting on a tip off, Habibur Rahman, OC, Kalaigaon PS along with Nakul Barua and Milan Sarma rescued the bird from the house. The bird was later handed over forest officials at Kalaigaon Police Station in presence of Brajen Bora,Cicrle Inspector of police and other media persons. One Sishu Ram Bhuyan, science teacher of Chengapather Higher Secondary School, who had been booked for helping examinees on February 21 at Bholabari HSLC centre was finally expelled from HSLC duty for three years by Mehjubin Banu, Inspector of Schools ,Udalguri district on February 24. The incident has creaed sensation in the district.The Inspector of Schools, Udalguri told this correspondent the she had seen an examinee copying from books even in the presence of the said invigilator.The teacher has been debarred from HSLC examination duty for a period of three years. An Indian python with serious head injury was rescued by a few nature loving villagers near Kalaigaon on February 19.The injured python ( 7feet 7 inches long,weighing 8 kg) was brought yo Kalaigaon Police Station for treatment before handing over to forest officials in the evening. According to information a group of minor boys had seen the reptile on a tree at Rupatol village at 2 PM.Mistaking it to be a monitor lizard,they attacked the python with catapults causing head injury.
