4 killed in Barpeta police firing

Four people died and over 50 others have been injured when police opened fire on a group of student protesters trying to stall government proceedings of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Barpeta on Wednesday.


According to information, over 10,000 protesters led by leaders of the All Assam Minority Students' Union went on the rampage on in Barpeta town demanding cancellation of the NRC pilot project.


Senior police officials said the mob turned violent and started vandalism, attacking shops and private vehicles and tried storming the district magistrate's office. Initially, police resorted to lathicharge and then opened fire in the air before firing on the crowd to disperse them. Three protesters were killed and 50 injured in the police action whilke another seruously injured people died on the way to GMCH along with others.

The district Magistrate of Barpeta Phanidhar Kalita by an order has promulgated section 144 crpc in the entire Barpeta town, Barpeta Road town, Pathsala Town and Howly town banning on moving two persons on two wheeler vehicles. One dead body was recovered at Manipuri Basti railway line at Barpeta Road railway station last night at about 12.30 pm. The deceased was identified as Billal Hussain, son of Mujjafar Ali of Manipuri basti railline. The family members claimed it as a pre-planned murder. The brother of the deceasedsaid that one Abu Bakkar Siddique threatened his brother on that day with some of his persons namely Rafiqul Islam (Raju), Aijul, Jalauddin and Mainul. The brother of Billal suspected Abu Bakkar behind this murder. Barpeta Road railkway station police rushed to the spot immediately and investigation is going on.
