Tai dance workshop at Sivasagar

A week-long Tai dance Workshop by artist from Shan state of Myanmer, organised by Sukhpha International, started from August 20 is going at Sivasagar and Amguri Deodhai Gaon. Sai Leang Han, the team leader and Sai Khaw Than, Sai Naung and Nang Saw Ohn Mar are members of the training team. Tutul Handique, an Assamese NRI is the coordinatng the event.

Witch hunting rerun in Kokrajhar

After a brief gap, yet another witch hunting incident has triggered shock and anger in Koktajhar where a section of local residents in a remote hamlet assaulted a person who is now undergoing treatment at a hospital.

The incident took place on July 18 at Dekadamra the villagers assembled at a public place and flogged Rabiram Narzary alleging witch craft.

 Later his family members rushed the 52 year old to the Kokrajhar RNB civil hospital where he is undergoing treatment. The  incident come to light after a week when a team of Kokrajhar media visited the village on Monday.

His family members lodged a complaint before the seeking action against the perpetrators. Talking to reporters, his daughter Samaina Narzary said her father do not know anything about witch craft since he is a farmer.

 Rabiram Narzary,who is under treatment said that led by the headman attacked him and refused to listen to him. “I don’t know anything about witchcraft in my life. I am illiterate. But they mercilessly beat up me.

Socail rights activist Biru Bala Rabha condemned the incident and urged district administration to take stern step against the people involved in it. She raised the demand at an awareness camp on Monday organized by the Assam Science Society organized at the Bashbari High School on Monday which drew huge support from many leading citizens and NGOs.

Gogoi staging dharna before Parliament

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all prepared to stage dharna in front of Parliament on Wednesday alleging non receipt of central funds to the state.

Party MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are also joining Gogoi at 11 in the morning. Senior Congress leaders told Assam Times that along with the Ex-Assam MPs, they want party president Sonia Gandhi to join the dharna.

Gogoi announced the dharna plan a couple of days back giving a deadline.

According to the Assam chief minister, the Centre has not received an estimated Rs 20,000 crore due to the State, including in oil royalty arrears. 

Law college principal suspended

Finally, the authority has suspended the Golaghat Law College Principal PK Sahu acting on a number of complaints from all sides.
The process to place him under suspension gathered momentum after the students lodged a complaint against Sahu highlighting a financial scam where he was alleged to have been involved.   
 

This was followed by the seizure of some official  documents by police forcing the students to boycott the classes to mount pressure on him to resign.

A crucial meeting of the governing body held in presence of the Deputy Commissioner kept him under suspension and asked Rupali Borthakur to hold the charge as acting principal.
