First Open University of the state

Finally Assam gets to flaunt its very own Open University. The very first open university of the state – Krishna Kanta Handique Open University (KKHOU) which was set up last year opened its doors for students recently as it started its academic activities with a Bachelor’s Preparatory Programme (BPP).

KKHOU is an answer to the prayers of those student’s who have been unable to continue with their studies owing to various reasons. Though Assam has been flooded by other Universities providing rather claiming to provide distance learning courses but these universities are of questionable repute as they are plagued by recognition issues. Moreover, the exams are not held regularly and the evaluation process too reeks of anomalies. Such universities fail to provide a support or assurance to the students and sometimes even jeopardize the future of the students. In such a state an open university in the state is a great confidence booster for the students of the region.

The BPP is a six month programme aimed at preparing students above 18 years who had failed to complete their 10+ 2 courses for higher studies.. The courses will be offered twice a year. The BPP admissions are already under way and will continue till February 15. Classes are slotted to start soon after and the exams for the first batch is planned to be held by July next year. About 60 study centres have been set up around the state where classes will be held for 15 Sundays. Results of examinations conducted will be declared within a month and the eligible ones will be able to pursue Bachelor courses launched by the University. The admission Fee for the BPP is Rs 700.

An affordable fee structure of the BPP is an added advantage for poor students and the innovative process of the BPP aims to provide a platform for many deserving students.

The university also plans to offer need based degrees and post graduate courses apart from a large number of professional and vocational diploma and certificate courses aimed at promoting development of human resources suitable for the job market, self employment and entrepreneurship development. Moreover the University will also start research oriented training programmes. The Medium of instruction will be English and Assamese and Bengali for the students of Barak valley.

It has plans to offer degree courses initially in Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Commerce (B Com), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Bachelor in Computer Application (BCA) and Bachelor in Mass Communication (BMC) from the ensuing academic session beginning in August next.

Sir, I im a 21yrs old girl, I have passed my HSSLC in the year 2005 and was studying engineering but due to some problem i had to quit it and since now its already july all the admission in most of the degree colleges had closed and am not able to get admission this year.I want to go for BA journalism/English.please give advice on what should i do now.In some colleges they refuse to give admission when they are coming to know that I have pased HSSLC three years back.I am really worried about my career now.Is this an end to my education.Don,t I deserve to study higher???

Security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and explosives in Cachar district on Saturday. These were seized from a house during a joint search operation at Harinadik village under Badarpur circle in Karimganj. The Garo National Liberation Army has released a senior State Bank of India official they kidnapped on February in East Garo Hills on Saturday. According to information, the SBI assistant general manager VK Gupta was freed in Krishnai in Goalpara district 17 days after he was was kidnapped by four unidentified men from the Chotamatia area. VK Gupta was kidnapped on February 20 while he was on his way to Assam after auditing at the bank's Mendipathar branch.
The Board of Secondary Education, Assam on Saturday revised the schedule for the on gong HSLC examination hours after the question paper anomalies in Nalbari district. In a statement, the Board has informed that the general science examination would be held on March 26 instead of March 10. Notably, a section of examinees in Samota HS School on Saturday received question papers of general science instead of social science. The SEBA has further ordered a probe into it and suspended the officer in charge of the examination Centre.
Suspected KPLT militants kidnapped Assam Chief Conservator of Forest Abhijit Rabha with a range officer on Saturday in Karbi Anglong district. The militants have demanded a ransom of Rs 1 crore for their safe release. According to information, Rabha was leading a delegation of 60 members to the Singhasan Hills to conduct a forest department survey on February 27. Some of them returned on February 29. Over ten local organizations in Dibrugarh have threatened to stop the gas cracker works if the CISF personnel responsible for Friday firing escapes action within 36 hours. Security forces in Dibrugarh district seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition were on Saturday. Acting on a tip-off, troops of 18 Jat Regiment conducted a search operation at Kochunio village and recovered the arms from an abandoned house. The arms recovered include two pistols, three grenades, one revolver, explosives and several rounds of ammunition.
The situation in Lepetkota is still on the boil a day after a worker died in firing. Thousands of workers are striking work on Saturday demanding action against the CISF personnel responsible for the shoot out where a worker died and three others sustained injury. Two persons sustained bullet injury at a sensational incident of robbery in Jorhat on Saturday.
