Very happy to know that the association is continuing to do well and growing. I had the privilege of being the President of the association around 1981-82 when I was a Professor of IIT-Madras ( now Chennai). During Assam Movement, we published the Brahmaputra Beckons. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday said that he is ready to quit if his party fails to put up impressive show in the Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Gogoi said that he would quit as soon as “Soniaji” wants him to do so.Notably, he has been saying that he would quit if his party fails to strike more than 7 seats in the polls.

Chief Election Officer on Saturday has suggested the Election Commission to conduct repolling at a booth in the outskirt of Guwahati acting on the allegations of vote rigging by a VDP member on Thursday.The assurance came to AGP and BJP delegations after the CEO came to see a footage produced before him to substantiate the allegations of rigging.The entire incident took place at Bornijora polling booth in full view of the presiding and polling officers which came to light after a private satellite news channel beamed the story with exclusive visuals of how a VDP member pressed the EVM button on behalf of a section of voters.
Kamrup Police have picked up a youth on Saturday acting on the allegations of rigging at a polling booth in North Guwahati where he was deployed as a VDP member.Identified as Bimal Boro, the youth was picked up from Baihata two days for his alleged rigging of polls at the Bornijora booth on Thursday.The rigging came to light when a private satellite news channel beamed a story showing the footage where Boro, the VDP member was seen pressing the EVM button on behalf of a section of voters in full view of the presiding and polling officers.
Security forces claimed to have killed two hardcore KLNLA militant during an encounter in Karbi Anglong district on Friday.The encounter took place at Borbeel in Howraghat area on Friday midnight during a combing operation where the militants died on the spot.Police further claimed to have seized weapons from their possession. BJP state president Sarbananda Sonowal claimed to have got the maximum number of seats in the Lok Sabha polls.Addressing a press conference in Dibrugarh, Sonowal said that the internal assessment of the party suggested that the opposition party have polled huge number of votes in all the three phases of Lok Sabha polls.“I can’t go constituency wise assessment right now. But I can tell you that we will get maximum number of 14 seats,” said the BJP state president.Sonowal further urged the election authority to ensure tight security at the strong rooms so that the verdicts are kept intact.
Assam Congress leadership is confident of ten seats a day after the third and final phase of Lok Sabha polls in the state.Talking to reporters at Rajiv Bhawan, APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita said that the ruling party will not get less than ten seats on May 16.Kalita further denied any adverse impact of dissidence in the polls saying that difference may be there within the legislators. But in the same breath, he said that dissidence have little impact on the polls as the party in rank and file tried to put up a good show in the just concluded polls.
