JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Flood scene improves: Toll mounts to 40

 There seems to be marginal let up in the flood scene during the last 24 hours following the halt of rains that lashed the catchment areas. The water levels of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries have shown receding trend during the last 12 hours much to a major respite for millions of people who have been rendered homeless. Fresh arrest warrant against Rakesh Paul

A special court in Guwahati has issued arrest warrant against Rakesh Paul two days after the former APSC chairman procured bail from the Supreme Court. Acting on a fresh complaint filed by a youth in Bhangagarh police station, alleging that Paul demanded bribe from him for job the court issued warrant against Paul and to produce him before it accordingly. Meanwhile, KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi alleged on Thursday that the BJP led government in Dispur indirectly helped Paul procure bail.

Diktat defied, tri colour fluttering

Defying rebel diktat Assam along with other north eastern states joined the nation-wide Independence Day celebration with traditional pomp and gaiety on Tuesday.  Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal hoisted the tricolour before taking salute of the march past by army, police, para military forces and NCC at the Khanapara veterinary Playground.  In his speech, Sonowal promised to help the state progress on all fronts. Flood fury taking grim turn

Assam flood scene turns grim with more and more areas coming under the surging waters of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries on Tuesday. Surging waters of the Brahmaputra threaten to submerge Nagaon town striking panic button among the citizens of the central Assam district on Sunday. The overflowing Brahmaputra waters breached a portion of a vital embankment in Jakhalabandha leaving huge volume of waters to the river Kolong which flows across the town. The district administration has sounded alert among the people in view if the situation.

Explosion in Moreh before I Day

Suspected rebels in Manipur exploded a mild bomb triggering huge panic and sensation two days before the Independence Day on Friday.  The explosion took place in Moreh town bordering Myanmar in the afternoon forcing the security men deployed there to fan in search of thr rebels. No rebel outfit has owned up the responsibility of the explosion and the security forces have also yet to ascertain the perpetrators. The explosion took place hours after the north eastern rebels jointly announced boycott call of the Independence Day celebration. The general strike will come into force from August 14 midnight which will end on August 15 evening.

ULFA diktat on I Day

The United Liberation Front of Asom (I) has announced boycott call of the Independence Day alleging colonial exploitation by the ruling clique in distant Delhi. In a statement issued here on Friday, the rebel outfit urged people to boycott the celebration and not to attend the flag hoisting and March past.  ULFA(I)  general strike will start from midnight on August 14 which will end after the celebration. NSCN-K, GNLA have already announced the boycott call.
