JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Soobodh Biswas caught

A police team probing the Silapothar clash has arrested Soobodh Biswas fifteen days after he alleged to have taken the lead to attack a local AASU office after a huge rally. Eyesight loss after cataract surgery

As many as ten people are believed to have lost eye sights after they underwent a government sponsored cataract surgery in Nagaon district recently leaving the health department in a state of controversy.A team of ophthalmologists conducted the surgeries on March 7 and 11 at the civil hospital under the National Blindness Control Programme where altogether 40 aged people attended.Of them, 30 have recovered successfully while ten others have complained of losing eyesight who were rushed to the Sankaradeva Nethralaya in Guwahati for better treatment.Doctors have blamed serious infections for it and assured the patients of all help for an early recovery.

Petro paucity hits Assam

Assam along with the other north eastern states are bracing up for an acute crisis of petroleum products as hundreds of workers associated here are on strike for minimum wages and other benefits.Talking to Assam Times, Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union  leaders said that the oil marketing companies have not been listening to the demands and that strike is the only way to keep these on mounting pressure.“We are underpaid. Buddhism in Assam released at press club

Asom Sahitya Sabha’s former president Kanaksen Deka inaugurated a book titled Buddhism In Assam on Monday at Guwahati Press Club. Penned by the US based engineer Dr Rajen Barua, the book is an outcome of serious research works for decades, where the history of Buddhism in the region from 600 BC to 1600 AD has been described with notable facts. Rhino poaching by NDFB (S)?

Caught in a barrage of criticism, forest minister Pramila Rani Brahma has blamed NDFB for repeated rhino poaching incidents in the state. Why Namani festival?

The BJP led Assam Government has come in for sharp criticism in the run up to the Namami Festival which peasant leader Akhil Gogoi called an attempt to saffronize the river Brahmaputra. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati on Monday, the KMSS leader said the festival never matches Assam, its people and culture. “The festival is nothing but an attempt to do politics over the mighty river which is the lifeline of Assamese culture and tradition,” said Akhil Gogoi. He said that after politicizing Sankardev and Lachit Barphukan, now BJP was trying to politicize the Brahmaputra.

Silapothar hearing on Tuesday

Assam additional chief secretary VB Pyarelal on Tuesday will conduct the hearing of the Silapothar clash where a section of rally participants representing a Bangla-speaking organization ransacked a local AASU office a couple of days back. The hearing will take place at the Silapothar Gaon Panchayat office from 10.30 in the morning to find out the details of the incident where at least ten local youths sustained injury. Police have arrested at least 25 in this connection while identified as Soobodh Biswas, the main culprit is still absconding.
