JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

The city based senior scribe Anowar Hussain, who was suffering from cancer, expired on Saturday night. Hailed from Ghagrapar locality in Nalbari district, Anowar was working for Asomiya Pratidin as its news editor. The cancer in his mouth was detected last year, following which he was undergoing treatment. As the news broke at midnight, many journalists went to his residence in Hatigaon area of the city and paid homage to his departed soul. Guwahati police on Friday have arrested three persons including a women hours after they kidnapped a minor girl from the city on Thursday. A group of senior police officials has been interrogating the trio to extract more information on the kidnapping network. They are believed to have confessed a growing network with NDFB-S to make money. The incident took place near Dispur where a house maid along with a minor girl went traceless from 12 noon. The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on 25 August apprehended four cattle smugglers from the Indo-Bangladesh border area. Days back, the BSF troops under Guwahati frontier seized a large number of cattle heads meant for smuggling to Bangladesh from the same Dhubri international border locality. “The cattle smugglers were identified as Rahim Ali (age 39 years), Jahikul Islam (57), Muktadul Hassan (33) and Sahidul Islam (24). Amid hectic lobbying in New Delhi for ministerial berth, Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal is preparing to expand his cabinet in a day or two. Sonowal is believed to have prepared a list. Nature conservation organisations like Wildflowers, CCER and Deopahar Researve Demand Committee hails the latest order of National Green Tribunal (NGT) on demolition of a wall blocking an elephant corridor near the Kaziranga National Park. On last Wednesday the tribunal asked the Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NFL), a public sector company, to demolish a 2.2 kilometre long wall blocking the elephant corridor within one month. The NGT proposed that the township of refinery ‘cannot be allowed’ as it comes in a “No Development Zone”.
