JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Don’t change state category

Assam on Wednesday has asked the Centre not to change the funding pattern. Here comes Vistara in the sky

Yet another air bus is all set to hover over the skies of Assam. Courtesy Vistara. Tata-Singapore Airlines joint venture carrier will operate in Assam from April.Official sources told Assam Times that initially the service would confine to Guwahati and Bagdogra in the region which would be expanded in a phase manner.The flight will halt at Guwahati for a short spell of time and then it would leave for Bagdogra from April 2 to connect the north east with New Delhi.Vistara currently operates across five domestic airports -- New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Goa and Hyderabad.

Steps on to deal with H1N1

The Assam government is fully prepared to deal with the swine flu outbreak. This was what health minister Dr Nazrul Islam told the Assam Assembly on Wednesday after the state registered five cases of H1N1 outbreak.According to Dr Islam, five persons have tested positive adding that the infection is not serious in nature.Responding to query in the Zero hours, the minister said that the infected persons - three in Dibrugarh and one in Guwahati have not been admitted to the hospital. Poaching worries Governor

Governor PB Acharya has expressed grave concerned over the unstoppable rhino poaching incidents in Kaziranga over the years.Hours after the shocking incident, he asked for a report from park director M.K. Yadav to examine the real factors that failed to protect the one horn animal. Acharya is learnt to have favoured a complete overhaul of the security arrangements at the park .

Rhino poaching back in Kaziranga

Despite round the clock vigil, rhino poaching refuses to die  down in Kaziranga. Poachers have struck the abode of one horn rhino on Wednesday sending shock and anger across the state.Forest authorities told Assam Times that the poachers killed a full grown rhino at Burhapahar range in the wee hours. The horn is missing from the carcass that bears bullet injuries.This is the sixth rhino poaching incident that riddles the world heritage site this year alone.

IED on railway track

Thousands of people travelling on two trains had a narrow escape when security forces recovered an IED on the railway tracks in Goalpara district on Friday.The powerful IED was recovered just fifteen minutes before a passenger train was scheduled to cross the spot.Security forces had a routine check on the railway track just a few km away from Dudhnoi where they spotted a suspicious packet where the IED was planted.N outfit has so far claimed the responsibility.
