JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

AASU holds statewide protest

The All Assam Students’ Union is holding a statwide protest on Tuesday reiterating the demand for constitutional safeguard for the indigenous people.Hundreds of activists of the state’s influential student body thronged the district and sub divisional headquarters at 11 in the morning and started staging dharna.The protesters in Guwahati told Assam Times that they won’t compromise the demand which they have been raising the last few decades.“We won’t bend. Steps to deal with H1N1 after first casualty

The death of swine flu patient in Jorhat has forced the Assam government to intensify the measures to curb the killer disease in the state.The authorities have asked the doctors to provide the best possible treatment to ten others who have been undergoing treatment.Official sources told Assam Times that the state till date has ten people who have already tested positive.  The state registered the first one H1N1 death on Monday when a 59 year old man died in the wee hours at the Jorhat Medical College Hospital.The government further has appealed to the people to remain alert these days. 

Gogoi tables state budget

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is tabling the state budget for 2015-16 on the floor of the Assembly on Tuesday.Gogoi, who is holding the finance portfolio is giving the people a rare dose of good news in his last state budget of his third straight term.The entire budgetary exercise is being made keeping in mind the assembly polls early next year. In March, 2016 Gogoi only table the vote on account in view of the assembly polls.  

Speaker suspends Sherman

Speaker Pranab Kumar Gogoi suspended MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed from the Assembly on Monday for refusing to stop asking supplementary questions even after the Zero Hour.Gogoi repeatedly asked the MLA to stop the supplementary question after the Zero Hour. But he refused to halt. When Ahmed continued to raise supplementary questions beyond, the Speaker suspended him for the day.

Action against Siddique!

The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has show-caused Siddique Ali Ahmed seeking an explanation for his statement.The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has also served a show-cause notice to the legislator asking him to explain his position within three days.Party leaders told Assam Times that he might face action if he fails to substantiate the allegation.The former minister claimed to have requested Gogoi to take up the matter with the Nagaland government after he gathered prior information on the incident. 

Siddique drops bombshell
