JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

The Assam Police on Saturday got Burling Bhutur on transit remand a day after the dreaded NDFB-S rebel was arrested in Bangalore.The wanted rebel is allegedly involved in the killing of six Adivasi people at Lungsung on December 23 apart from killing of 6 Hindi-speaking people in Sarfang guri on January 16.A team of police from Guwahati is on the way back from Bangaluru on Saturday along with the NDFB-S leader whom police caught acting on tipoff from their Assam counterpart.Notably, he was also wanted in the gory Serfang guri carnage where he and his group pulled down around 12 passengers from a bus and shot 6 of them dead at Athiabari.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi finally reshuffled his cabinet on Friday. But the major reshuffle has raised the eyebrows of the Guwahati denizens who have no representation in the council of ministers.Guwahati had two ministers when Gogoi became the chief minister for the third consecutive term. The Assam Government is preparing a land acquisition bill of its own after it rejected the Centre’s move. Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Wednesday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that his government has already refused to accept the Centre’s move, that’s why, Dispur is in the process for a new bill.   Gogoi, however, said that he is not sure of when the new bill would be allowed to come up in the assembly. “If we will be ready with the Bill we will bring it in next month," said Gogoi.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the people have not reposed faith on the Gogoi government even after it was elected for three consecutive terms.Talking to reporters on Tuesday, he said that the government has failed to deliver the goods  and that the reshuffle won’t help people get any respite.
