JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Blockade forces trains to halt

Normal train service remains disrupted in Assam on Thursday when Adivasi people blocked the rail tacks in protest against the NDFB-S massacre in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur where around 70 people lost their lives.Led Adivasi National Convention Committee, Adivasi people in large number came out of their homes in the various places across the state in the morning and blocked the rail tracks to prevent the trains from moving for several hours.Reports of rail blockade are pouring in from several parts of the state. Violence spreads to Udalguri

The trouble seems to have spread beyond Kokrajhar and Sonitpur a day after the carnage that left around 70 killed on Tuesday. The militants unleashed yet another reign of terror in Udalguri leaving an Adivasi man injured on Wednesday. The incident took place in the evening when the militants started indiscriminate firing at a village where one person sustained injury. They further set ablaze several houses after the panic stricken people fled from their homes fearing attack. The injured is battling with death in the hospital. Hours after the attack, Adivasi people in large number came out and burnt down many huts in Lamabari and the Udalguri weekly market forcing police to step in.

Rajnath on stock taking visit

Union home minister Rajnath Singh is visiting the trouble hit area of Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts to take stock of the situation on Thursday. Accompanied by his minister of state Kiren Rijiju, the union minister is scheduled to talk to the victims’ family members and panic-stricken people in the relief camps set up in both the districts. Top ranked civil and army, police and CRPF officials are also accompanying the union minister today.

NIA to probe Adivasi carnage

The National Investigation Agency will probe the Adivasi carnage that left atleast 70 people in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts. Union home minister Rajnath Singh agreed to institute the probe acting on chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s suggestion at a high level meet in Dispur on Tuesday night where law and order situation was reviewed. Gogoi and Singh agreed to go all out against NDFB-S by intensifying the crackdown in some pockets. Union minister of state for home Kiren Rijiju, DGP Khagen Sarma, top ranked security force officials attended the meeting.

Rajnath assesses security scenario

Union home minister Rajnath Singh is on a stock taking visit to Assam on Wednesday a day after NDFB-S militants mowed down at least 68 people in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts to retaliate the combing operation. NDFB-S carnage toll 68: Gogoi

The Assam government has confirmed that the death toll in the serial NDFB-S serial attacks in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts has gone up to 68.   According to chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the dreaded attack took place in two places in Sonitpur where the toll stands at 37.He said that 25 others were killed in Kokrajhar district while the toll in Chirang district is 3. The deceased included 21 women and 18 children.Senior ministers Nilamani Sen Deka and Basanta Das have been camping in Kokrajhar district and Chirang while Rockybul Hussain, Prithbi Majhi and Tanka Bahadur Rai are monitoring the situation in Sonitpur district. 

3 Adivasis killed in police firing

Three Adivasi people were killed when security forces sprang upon a huge crowd who took to the streets in Dhekiajuli on Wednesday in protest against the NDFB-S attacks where 37 killed in the district.Armed with bows and arrows thousands of Adivasi people came out to the streets demanding measures to ensure their safety and security. Suddenly, the protesters turned violent when policemen tried to disperse them for defying the indefinite curfew.A section of the protestors started attacking the security forces forcing them to resort to firing and lathi charge where at least 6 protesters sustained bullet injury.
