JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Union home minister Rajnath Singh is visiting the trouble hit area of Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts to take stock of the situation on Thursday. The Assam government has confirmed that the death toll in the serial NDFB-S serial attacks in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts has gone up to 68.   According to chief minister Tarun Gogoi, the dreaded attack took place in two places in Sonitpur where the toll stands at 37.He said that 25 others were killed in Kokrajhar district while the toll in Chirang district is 3. Simmering tension in Kokrjhar and Sonitpur have forced the authorities to clamp in definite curfew in both the districts where NDFB-S militants killed over 50 Adivasi people in five serial attacks on Tuesday. Additional forces have been deployed in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur to firmly deal with the situation. The death toll in the five incidents of attacks in Sonitpur district has crossed 50 with the recovery of more bodies on Tuesday. The dreaded serial attacks were reported simultaneously from 6 to 7 in the evening.According to information, at least 40 people, all Adivasi people, were killed in Sonitpur district alone.
