Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Anjan Dutta formally took over as APCC president on Thursday at a function in the Rajiv Bhawan attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with a few senior leaders. In his speech, Gogoi hoped that under Dutta’s leadership the party would be able to retain power in the 2016 assembly polls. BJP and Congress traded charges and counter charges in the Assam Assembly over the move to stop ration in the tea gardens. Speaker Pranab Gogoi feared bad days of law and situation if the ration is stopped in the tea gardens. He further asked the BJP legislators to take up the issue with the Centre.Amid the din over the issue in the zero hour, Gogoi told BJP MLAs, ”instead of shouting here, please convey to your leadership in Delhi that if it is not resolved, bad days are coming."

The Assam Human Rights Commission will issue notice to Darrang district magistrate on the recent death of two babies after vaccination.   A division bench comprising chairman Dr. AH Saikia, member Tarun Phookan decided to issue notice to the district magistrate to probe into the circumstances leading to the death of the two babies and the ailment of some others after being vaccinated. Security forces claimed to have killed two United Achik Liberation Army at an encounter in Goalpara district on Thursday.The encounter took place at Kongkhal area in the district bordering Meghalaya in the wee hours.Acting on a tip off, troops of army's Red Horns Division and police jointly conducted an operation in the tiny village where the encounter took place. The two Meghlaya-based militants died on the spot.Two 7.65 mm pistols, two hand grenades, a large amount of ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered during the operation.

The Assam Legislative assembly on Wednesday cleared the Assam Appropriation (No.III) Bill, 2014 to grant Rs 6888 crore for defraying charges upto March 31 next year.Agriculture Minister Nilomoni Sendeka moved the bill on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi who holds the finance portfolio in the House to be passed by voice vote. The entire amount charged on the consolidated fund was for 78 departments.
