JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Yechuri sees Left prospect in 2016

Gogoi unhappy with GST on petroleum

Assam is set to lose a huge amount of Rs 1000 crore as revenue if chief minister Tarun Gogoi is to be believed. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said that the Centre is contemplating to bring petroleum products under GST and that if the process is not stopped the state would be a big loser. According to Gogoi, the loss amount won’t be less than Rs 1,000 crore.Notably, under the proposed system in the new bill, the Union and state would be free to levy general sales tax on petroleum products at a low rate. Gogoi ready for cabinet rejig

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi pulls up his sleeves for cabinet rejig. Gogoi is believed to have received green signal for the party high command. Sources told Assam Times that the chief minister would drop around 9 cabinet colleagues to induct 12 others. ULFA-I’s ‘NO’ to Gerukamukh dam

ULFA’s anti-talk faction threatens to target NHPC if it resumes the mega dam construction at Gerukamukh. In a statement, the militant outfit’s vice president Paresh Asom said that they would not allow anybody to build mega dams in future.According to ULFA-I, the Gerukamukh project would not help Assam and instead it would have adverse impact in the downstream areas. It said it would support the dams only suggested by the experts.ULFA-I’s reaction came a day after the Centre and the anti-dam protesters agreed to set up an 8 member panel of experts to study the entire issue.   

In quest of border bonhomie

A border peace panel is touring the tense areas along the Assam-Nagaland border to restore confidence among the people. Comprising leading citizens from both the north eastern states, the team so far has been interacting with the villagers and community leaders for the last few days.The committee members toured the Borholla-Madhpur  area bordering Changpang in Wokha district on Friday to spread the message of age old brotherhood among the people living along the inter state border.On Friday they organized a friendly volleyball match among the border people in a bid to boost bonhomie along the border. Deal for science city at Sonapur

Dispur has struck a deal with National Council of Science Museums to develop a science city in the outskirt of Guwahati. Sources told Assam Times that the government would invest Rs 110 crore for the project at Sonapur. The pact was signed between Assam government and National Council of Science Museums in presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Friday. The government would bear the recurring expenditure and the estimated average annual expenditure would be around Rs 7 crore. The entire project requires a plot of 250 bighas to be operated and maintained by a registered society while National Council of Science Museums will have an ex-officio member of the society.

Acharya takes over as Assam Guv

 Nagaland Governor Padmanabha Balakrishna Acharya took over as Assam governor on Friday a day after JB Patnaik left the state ending five years tenure. Gauhati High Court chief justice administered Acharya the oath of office and secrecy at a brief function at the Raj Bhawan in the morning. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with his cabinet colleagues and other political leaders attended the function.  Gogoi received the Nagaland Governor at the LGBI Airport on Thursday afternoon. Acharya is also holding additional charge as governor of Tripura.

Farewell to JB Patnaik

Janki Ballav Patnaik leaves Assam on Thursday a day after his tenure ended as governor. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with his cabinet colleagues bade him farewell at a function at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport on Friday afternoon.In his short speech, the emotional outgoing governor thanked the people of Assam for allowing him to discharge his duties smoothly.Meanwhile, Gauhati High Court Chief Justice will administer oath to Nagaland Governor PB Acharya as Assam governer at a brief function at the Raj Bhawan on Friday untill further arrangement.  

ULFA man surrenders in Dibrugarh

A hardcore ULFA (I) militant surrendered before police in Dibrugarh district with sophisticated arms and ammunition on Friday. Identified as ULFA(I) Raktim Moran,  the ULFA-I lance corporal is a resident of Mudai Gaon in the same district who deposited one AK-81 rifle, one Chinese grenade, three magazines and 79 rounds of ammunition. Moran joined the outfit three years ago before undergoing arms training in Myanmar. Paresh Baruah is believed to have sent him last month to carry out sabotage work.
