JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

SC slams Centre for border dispute

The Centre on Wednesday drew no less flak from the Supreme Court over the Assam-Nagaland border dispute that hurts both the states at regular intervals. It further asked the Centre to respond within 10 days on the 50 year old issue. Taking up a 26 year old petition filed by the Assam government on Wednesday, the country’s apex court said that the Centre can’t remain a mute spectator.   A division bench comprising justice T S Thakur, justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and justice R Banumathi, said that the Centre was supposed to act and resolve it. Tension in Baksa district

The recovery of two bullet-riddled bodies creates no less sensation in Basks district that can lead to yet another chapter of group clash in the BTAD areas if steps are not taken to deal with these seriously.   Identified as Jamal Khandeker and Yusuf Ali the two bodies were spotted at Labdangguri on Tuesday 24 hours after the duo went missing. AASU stages statewide protest

AASU activists on Tuesday staged demonstration across the state opposing Prime minister Narendra Modi’s open support to the Indo-Bangla land deal.  AASU workers staged a day long dharna in all district and sub-divisional headquarters from the morning asking Modi to cancel the controversial land deal.Shouting slogans against the prime minister, AASU leaders told Assam Times that they won’t allow the Centre to give away land to Bangladesh which really belongs to Assam. Dispur moves HC against ONGC, OIL

Dispur has moved the Gauhati High Court seeking a direction to ONGC and OIL to pay royalty to the state on crude oil on pre-discounted rate in the light of a Supreme Court order.In its recent interim order, the Supreme Court directed ONGC to pay crude oil royalty to Gujarat on pre-discounted crude price beginning February 1, 2014.

All out against land deal support

AGP, AJYCP and KMSS have strongly criticized Narendra Modi hours after the prime minister openly backed the Indo-Bangla land deal calling it a panacea for permanent solution to the immigration problem.Apart from All Assam Students Union, AGP is quite disappointed with Modi who has openly supported the deal. AASU flays PM over land deal

All Assam Students’ Union takes serious note of Narendra Modi’s open support to the Indo-Bangla land deal. The state’s influential student body has criticized the prime minister hours after he backed the deal at a rally in Guwahati on Sunday.In a statement, AASU leaders made it clear that it won’t allow the Modi government at the Centre to implement it. AASU observed that the people of Assam are dead opposed to the deal and instead the Indo-Bangla border should be sealed if the Centre is really interested to stop influx from across the border. 

Why Modi wants land deal helpful?

The Centre will go ahead with the Indo-Bangladesh land swap deal which will help Delhi and Dispur deport the Bangladeshi immigrants. PM vows to deport immigrants

Prime minister Narendra Modi on Sunday vowed to deport the Bangladeshi immigrants saying that he would implement the poll promises.Addressing a huge rally at Sarusajai, Modi said that he won’t compromise safety and security of the state and its people.  “ I am aware of the infiltration problem confronting the state for decades. I am also aware of what I told you in my poll rallies. The crackdown on the immigrant will start. Just wait and see,” simply this line drew huge clap from thousands of the BJP activists who thronged the stadium to hear Modi.He said that he would in no way endanger the safety and security of the people of Assam.  

Modi’s smart police concept

Prime minster Narendra Modi speaks of his mind. In his address at the second and last day of the DGP-IGP conference in Guwahati on Sunday, Modi talks of his own concept of smart police.“I have a new concept ie smart police. Smart Police requires sensitive, model and mobility, alert and accountable, Reliable and responsive, tech savy and trained.He said the two days conference is a great moral booster for the north eastern region where militancy continues to stifle development. He further said that there is no dearth of weapons for the policemen. But these weapons should be placed in the right hands.
