JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Farewell to JB Patnaik

Janki Ballav Patnaik leaves Assam on Thursday a day after his tenure ended as governor. ULFA man surrenders in Dibrugarh

A hardcore ULFA (I) militant surrendered before police in Dibrugarh district with sophisticated arms and ammunition on Friday. Identified as ULFA(I) Raktim Moran,  the ULFA-I lance corporal is a resident of Mudai Gaon in the same district who deposited one AK-81 rifle, one Chinese grenade, three magazines and 79 rounds of ammunition. Moran joined the outfit three years ago before undergoing arms training in Myanmar. Paresh Baruah is believed to have sent him last month to carry out sabotage work. 

National award for Gunjan

Good news for Gunjan Sarma. The 14 year old school girl from Nazira will receive the national bravery award. The award would be conferred to her along with a few others at a function in New Delhi next month.Gunjan has already received the state bravery award after she saved her ten classmates from being kidnapped by miscreants last year.   

ASS to invite Pranab Mukherjee

An Asom Sahitya Sabha delegation is camping in New Delhi to invite president Pranab Mukherjee to the Kaliabor session in January next year.Eminent litterateur Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora will formally preside over the session after taking over the reins of the state’s biggest literary organization from his predecessor Imran Shah.           

IED found in Guwahati bound bus

Yet another major explosion was averted when security forces recovered a huge bomb from a bus in the outskirt of Guwahati on Wednesday.Weighing around 5 kg, the powerful IED was recovered in Rangiya during a joint operation by police and CRPF team from the bus in the evening. Acting on a tip off, security forces halted the bus at Dalmagate on its way to Guwahati from Nalbari. Police recovered the IED from a vegetables bag inside the bus. Later, army’s bomb disposal squad arrived in the spot and the IED was defused.    

Guwahati bus leaves for Dhaka

After years of will-it-won’t-it, Guwahati resumed the bus service to Dhaka on Wednesday. PWD minister Ajanta Neog flagged off the bus on trial run to the neighbouring country at a brief function in Guwahati in the morning. The bus started the much-awaited journey via Shillong and Dawki border point in Meghalaya. The regular bus service is expected to start in two months time after the joint delegation submitted the survey report. A set of modalities are also would be worked out to resume the regular bus service. IITian’s death shrouds in mystery

The recent death of Tussar Yadav inside IIT-Guwahati campus seems to have shrouded in mystery. The IITian’s parents have alleged it a murder case and that they are unhappy with the police investigation which has yet to ascertain the real circumstances where the Gurgaon student died on September 14.  In an appeal sent to Assam Times, his parents rued that only a CBI probe would be able to unearth the truth.  They further alleged that the suicide note handed over to them bears no mention of date and signature whereas the IIT-G authorities have cited depression quoting the note "Hi mummy papa this is Tushar, I want to tell you about my story. Good news for Assam tea at a time when Centre has been denying national drink status. The state’s tea is giving fantastic taste in Stockholm at the Nobel Prize ceremony on Wednesday. Steps on to select new governor

The Centre is considering the names of five veteran political leaders to replace JB Patnaik as Assam governor whose tenure ends on Wednesday.The name is yet to be finalized.
