JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Trader shot dead in Lakhimpur

The United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) seems to have unleashed a reign of terror in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit slated for Saturday. ULFA militants belonging to Paresh Baruah faction shot dead a Hindi speaking man in Lakhimpur district on Thursday.According to police, two motorcycle-borne assailants started indiscriminate firing at a trader near a petrol depot in the town early in the morning.Identified as Kumud Kumar Patel, the trader died on the spot while two others sustained injury. The duo have been identified as Santosh Patel and Rupak Kumar who are undergoing treatment in the hospital.  

ULFA man killed in shoot out

Amid stepped up offensive, security forces killed an Ulfa(I) rebel on Thursday two days before Prime Minister’s maiden visit to Assam.  Identified as Nitul Gogoi, the ULFA man was killed near Tingkhang in in Dibrugarh district in the morning. ULFA-I later called Gogoi a pro-talks faction of the Ulfa.

The United Liberation Front of Asom on Thursday threatened to target BJP leaders and activists in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit to Guwahati slated for Saturday.In a statement sent to media on Thursday, the outfit demands complete information on the ULFA leaders who went missing during the operation all clear in Bhutan. 

Explosives found in Khanapara

Despite round-the-clock vigil in the run up to Narendra Modi’s visit to Guwahati, security forces recovered a huge consignment of explosives on Thursday. Three bags full of explosives were recovered from Khanapara in the city early in the morning.Guwahati police on Thursday recovered three boxes of explosives from a commercial vehicle near Mizoram House in the city. Police further arrested the driver along with a passenger.Identified as Saharuddin Barbhuiya, the driver told the police the boxes were loaded by a courier agency in Aizawl on Wednesday. I won’t contest in polls: Himanta

Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday that he would not field himself in the election till CBI exonerates him from Saradha scam. Minutes after CBI’s 8 hour long interrogation at the CGO Complex in Kolkata, the former minister said that he would request his party leadership not to field him in the polls till his innocence is not proved. According to him, there is political conspiracy against him and that CBI has summoned no powerful persons to be interrogated in this connection.

Sankaradeva seminar at Madhupur

CBI’s special investigation team set up to probe Saradha scam grilled Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma for several hours in Kolkata on Wednesday.
