JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Winter session from Dec 15

The Assam Assembly will hold its winter session from December 15. Governor JB Patnaik has convened the session for only 12 working days. Several crucial bills are scheduled to be moved in the short session.   

ULFA-I militant arrested

Tinsukia police have arrested a hardcore ULF-I militant n Saturday a day after the militant outfit believed to have exploded a powerful grenade in a tea garden area. Identified as Bhaity Asom, the dreaded ULFA militant was captured during a search operation in Borguri area in the afternoon. 

Dr Swamy in Guwahati

Dr Subramanima Swamy is on a two days visit to Guwahati. The veteran BJP leader arrived in the capital city to be received by the party leaders at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in the afternoon. Dr Swamy is scheduled to attend two party meetings in Guwahati on Sunday before leaving back to New Delhi.

JFA urges Ao Senden to withdraw book ban

Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) has expressed concern over the ban on a book of a Dimapur based Naga Editor-Journalist by a tribal body and urged Ao Senden to withdraw the restriction urgently. Militants behind Ratanpur firing

The Golaghat police have blamed Naga militants for the recent firing at Ratanpur paddy field where a villager was killed and three others sustained injury.According to police, despite tight vigil by the security forces, armed miscreants from Nagaland opened fire on a group of farmers when they were harvesting crops. Senior police officers are probing the shocking incident to convey it to their Nagaland counterpart. 

KPLT militants killed in gun fight

Security forces claimed to have killed 2 dreaded Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger insurgents at an encounter in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday.The encounter took place in the morning when police and army launched a counter offensive against the Karbi militants Rongtaru. Police nabbed another KPLT militant after the two hour long encounter. Two AK-47 rifles and one pistol were recovered from the slain cadres. 

AASU Satyagraha ends in Guwahati

AASU on Saturday pledged not to allow the state to become a safe haven for the fundamentalists and illegal Bangladeshis in Assam. Jihadists, Al Qaedas. Power tariff hike generates protest

Yet another blow awaits the common people. Power tariff will hike which generates statewide protest on Saturday a day after the Assam Electricity Regulatory Commission approved it.The hike to be enforced from December 1 is an average 13.1 per cent. According to the AERC, the increase in the tariff for different consumer categories ranges from around 7 per cent to 18 per cent. The consumers have been paying a fuel and power purchase price adjustment (FPPPA) charge of Rs 0.36 from July.The domestic consumers will have to pay an additional amount at the rate of Rs 0.31 to Rs 0.74 per unit, depending on the rate of consumption. Trouble for Himanta, Anjan

The Central Bureau of Investigation steps up the probe into the Saradha scam where a circle of powerful political leaders is involved.The country’s premier investigation agency probing the scam is all set to quiz former minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma and Anjan Dutta.The duo received summons from to appear before the SIT on November 24 at its Salt Lake based office. CBI earlier questioned Dutta in this connection.CBI on August 28 conducted raid at the residence of Dutta in Guwahati apart from Dr Sarma’s residence and Newslive office owned by his wife.   Sources told Assam Times that CBI if need be is likely to seek their custodial interrogation.
