JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Experts in the field of history deplored the decreasing importance of history in the school level. The said that history unites people and that it would only create historical reality in the society.Noted writer Namita Gokhle, historian Pushpesh Pant, journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap and Dibrugarh University Professor Chandan Sarma participated in the session after the opening session at NEDFi House on Saturday.   

GLF 2014: Focus on historical facts

A critical approach on history came up for a livelier discussion when a panel of experts had a brainstorming session as part of the Guwahati Lit Fest on Saturday.Noted expert and former JNU professor Puspesh Pant, author Namita Gokhle, The India Express journalist Samudra Gupta Kashyap and Dibrugarh University professor Dr Chandan Sarma threw some lights on a few aspects on the distortion of historical facts and figures. Gokhle moderated the discussion much to the benefit of the students of history.      

Tully talks of killer language

Renowned journalist Sir William Mark Tully on Saturday stressed translation of regional literatures into English calling it a need of the hour. In his address at the opening session at the Guwahati Literary Festival on Saturday, the former BBC correspondent said that nobody should take resort to the killer languages.       

Concern over carnage

Eminent litterateur and Asom Sahitya Sabha president Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora expressed grave concern over the recent carnage in Kokrahar and Sonitpur districts.Opening the Guwahati Lit Fest on Saturday, Dr Bora said, “it is not time to tolerate all forms of terror acts that stifle the society.” He further asked the government to diagnose the disease. 

Eminent journalist attends Lit Fest

Eminent journalist and former BBC correspondent Sir William Mark Tully, scholar Pushpesh Pant, prolific writer Namita Gokhle and Asom Sahitya Sabha president Dr Dhrubajyoti Bora are dignitaries who shared the dais. Dr Bora opened the festival.The first summit began at the NEDFi House in Dispur condoled the carnage in Kokrajhar, Sonitpur, Chirang districts by holding a one minute silent prayer. This was followed by a bogreet by award winning singer Tarali Sarma. Assam Times is giving its viewers the live updates of the 3 day long festival. 

Army boss on stock taking visit

Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag is on a visit to Assam on Saturday to take stock of the crackdown against NDFB-S four days after the militant outfit killed at least 70 people in Kokrajhar and Sonitpur district.General Suhag met Union home minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi on Friday is arriving in Tezpur in the morning. Sonitpur incident free in 24 hr

Normalcy is gradually back to Sonitpur district after the NDFB-S carnage. District administration told Assam Times that there is no report of any fresh incident of NDFB-S attacks during the last 24 hours. More and more army and para military forces are arriving in the district to intensify the counter offensive apart from guarding the panic stricken people who either have been rendered homeless or fled their homes to escape the attack. Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF and police have been continuing the crackdown against the NDF-S rebels. The security forces have been concentrating on the dense jungles along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border where the rebels are believed to have been hiding....

Encounter in Chirang

NDFB-S rebels are believed to have engaged in a heavy encounter with security forces in Chirang district on Friday. According to reports, the militants hurled grenades at a group of SSB jawnas deployed in the operation along the Indo-Bhutan border in the afternoon. This was followed by heavy gunbattle which continued for several hours. Details awaited.

Congress facing flak on carnage

The Akhil Bharatiya Hindivasi Yuba Chatra Parishad in BTAD has accused Congrss party of playing politics on the carnage of Adivasi peoples in the state.Hindivasi Yuba Chatra Parishad leader Gopal Prasad came down heavily on former minister and Congress leader Ripun Bora saying, “Who is Ripun Bora to talk to reports about the? Bora is not entitled to speak.” Slamming Bora he said that the statement was very unfortunate and urged him to stay away from giving such immature statement in near future.
