JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi turns 81 on Saturday. But the birth day will be a low-key affairs which will confine to his family members only at Koinadhara. He has already received umpteen numbers of wishes on his birth day. Doctors at the GMCH have advised Gogoi at least 3 days’ rest on health ground.Gogoi was born on October 11 in 1934 at Rangajan Tea Estate in Jorhat district. After completing his graduation from J.B. College in Jorhat, studied Law and took LLB Degree from Gauhati University. Gogoi took over as chief minister in 2001 and his third consecutive term expires in April 2016.

A local court West Bengal has remanded six youths to 14 days police custody a day after they were arrested from Barpeta in connection with the Burdwan explosion. They have been nabbed on the basis of the confessional statements of Amina Bibi and Rajira Bibi whom the West Bengal Police arrested after the explosion where two terrorists were killed and one was injured at a house in Khagragarh area of Burdwan on October 2. Apart from it, Assam police have been probing possible links of the six youths with the Bangladesh-based Islamic terror network Jamat-ul-Mujahideen. The investigation is on to get some vital clues regarding the presence of Islamic terror network in the state.
Sensation prevails in Tezpur after a police officer allegedly committed suicide on Friday. The incident was believed to have taken place in the wee hours where senior police officer Naren Talukdar shot himself dead at his room. He shot himself to death within own service pistol and is body was found inside his room at the police station complex in the morning. Post mortem report is expected to come out on Friday evening. Investigation is on to ascertain the reason for the policeman taking the extreme step.
In yet another case of gruesome crime against women that hangs the state’s head in shame, a teenaged girl was raped than kled n Nagaon district on Wednesday.The shocking incident took place at Kawaimari village under Rupahihat police station at night where a girl was kidnapped to be raped by the miscreants. Then she was killed. Police and local residents found the body at a jute field in the village on Thursday. Investigation is in progress. Police officials probng the case are tightlipped on the development. They are waiting for the post mortem report.
Two probes will ascertain the truth behind the allegations of police excess on the flood-hit people in Goalpara district on Wednesday.Sources told Assam Times that the government has ordered two separate probes into the distribution of poor quality relief materials and alleged police atrocities on flood-hit people in the flood-hit district.A magistrate will probe the allegations of distribution of sub standard materials among the marooned people. Parliamentary Secretary for Home Etowa Munda said the two probes would ascertain the real incident where several people have been injured in Bolbola on Wednesday. Munda , who visited the area and interacted with the flood-hit people on Thursday tried to quell the situation saying that the guilty would not be spared. In yet another landmark order, the Gauhati High Court has asked the Centre to clear Rs 10 lakh to Silipi Acharjee whose husband died in army excess.The court directive came out after Silpi moved high court with the sensational allegation that her husband was killed by the army in their custody.She further alleged that Biswajeet was tortured in army custody after sustaining external and internal injuries.
