All India Patriotic Forum, Assam branch on Saturday remembered Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought many battles for the motherland. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury passed away on December 11, 2013 at his residence in Patacharkuchi of lower Assam. A Lieutenant of INA, Devchoudhury maintained an active life till his demise at the age of 97.

In a formal memorial meeting held in Guwahati Press Club various speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Devchoudhury and his colleagues who led an eventful struggle in various south and southeast Asian places like Singapore, Rangoon, Arakan front etc. With his sincerity and commitment, Devchoudhury elevated himself up to the level of Lieutenant in INA and led his troop against the British imperial forces mostly on the India-Myanmar border in 1944 to make India an independent nation.

Speakers including freedom fighters Jatin Goswami & Ganesh Chandra Das, Prof Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Rupma Barua, Hiten Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, KN Devchoudhury, Pramod Kalita etc paid their heartiest tributes to the departed soul.

Before the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to Devchoudhury and two patriotic songs ‘Bande Mataram----’and ‘O Mor Aponar Desh ----’were also sung by the participants in the memorial meeting.

SHILLONG:Five people including a poll candidate in Meghalaya died in a powerful explosion in the poll bound north eastern state on Sunday. According to information, suspected GNLA rebels exploded the bomb at Samanda at 7.30 in the evening where NCP candidate from Williamnagar Jonathone N Sangma along with two security guards and three others died on the spot. Sangma, was believed to have received threat from the rebel outfit as he filed nomination papers. Even the rebel warned the voters' of dire consequences if Sangma was voted to power. PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: A CPM worker sustained serious injury when two group of political parties clashed with each other on Sunday when the north eastern state was going to the assembly polls in 59 constituencies. The clash broke out at Golaghati area in Dayaram para in the afternoon. According to allegations, a group of BJP workers suddenly sprang upon their CPM counterparts where he sustained serious injury. Identified as Pulin Bardhan, he was rushed to the hospital where he is battling with death.

DIBRUGARH: A gang of gunmen unleashed a reign of terror in a remote village in Dibrugarh on Saturday triggering sensation in the entire district. As many as 10 armed men stormed into a village in Kakopothar area in the wee hours in search of someone striking panic among the villagers.  Towards the morning, these unidentified gunmen took away a local youth Suranjeet Konwar from his house which is still remaining clueless. MARCUS KANYAK KOHIMA: A Nagaland poll candidate had a narrow escape from a bid on his life on Friday keeping the pre poll political landscape on the boil. AGARTALA: After interrogating for two hours at a police station in Agartala, the election observer asked Pallab Lochan Das to leave Tripura on Friday night. The power minister was caught in a remote area in Dhalai district in the poll bound north eastern state acting on the allegations of violating model code of conduct since he was allegedly distributing cash among the voters.
