Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Peshawar forces high alert in schools

Assam is on alert two days after the Peshawar incident where militants massacred over 150 students at a school. Dispur on Friday put all the districts authorities on alert to thwart such militant attempt. The security forces are also on maximum alert. Minister Rockybul Hussain disclosed it on the floor on behalf of the home department on Friday. Assembly adjourned sine die

The five-day long Winter Session of the Assam Legislative Assembly ended sine die on Friday. NEIIPP suspension results in loss

Dispur on Friday deplored that the state has attracted investment commitments of nearly Rs 26,000 crore under North East Industrial and Investment Promotion Policy (NEIIPP).Industry minister Pradyut Bordoloi informed the Assembly saying the it would result in revenue deficit for the state. He said, " Rs 25,780 crore worth of entrepreneur memoranda have been signed since the implementation of the NEIIPP." According to him, "the Centre suddenly stopped the scheme at a time when the investment was going up an up. But Union industry minister Nirmala Sitharaman earlier told us that the finance ministry had informed that they cannot give subsidy due to revenue deficit of the Centre." ...

KMSS hunger strike enters second day

Several Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti activists have been staging hunger strike in Dispur demanding settlement rights to those living in the government land and forest etc. The two days hunger strike enters second and last day on Friday participated by many activists at the Dispur Last Gate.Talking to Assam Times, KMSS activists said that those who have migrated to Assam before March 25, 1971, should be granted the right irrespective of their caste and creed, allotting plots of land.        

Dutta formally takes charge

Anjan Dutta formally took over as APCC president on Thursday at a function in the Rajiv Bhawan attended by chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with a few senior leaders. In his speech, Gogoi hoped that under Dutta’s leadership the party would be able to retain power in the 2016 assembly polls. Taking pot shots at BJP, Gogoi lambasted the BJP for its U-turn on all vital issues confronting the state. “We have seen the colours of BJP and that its Mission 84 is nothing but a figment of imagination,” he said. Move on ration worries Speaker Gogoi

BJP and Congress traded charges and counter charges in the Assam Assembly over the move to stop ration in the tea gardens. Speaker Pranab Gogoi feared bad days of law and situation if the ration is stopped in the tea gardens. He further asked the BJP legislators to take up the issue with the Centre.Amid the din over the issue in the zero hour, Gogoi told BJP MLAs, ”instead of shouting here, please convey to your leadership in Delhi that if it is not resolved, bad days are coming."

BJP targets Nazrul on the floor

BJP legislators in the Assam Assembly went all out against Dr Nazrul Islam after the civil supplies minister charged Delhi with creating troubles for Dispur by stopping ration in the tea gardens apart from disallowing the National Food Security Act (NFSA).Dr Islam said, " the Centre has decided to stop the subsidised rice and atta for the tea gardens. AHRC notice to Darrang authority

The Assam Human Rights Commission will issue notice to Darrang district magistrate on the recent death of two babies after vaccination.   A division bench comprising chairman Dr. AH Saikia, member Tarun Phookan decided to issue notice to the district magistrate to probe into the circumstances leading to the death of the two babies and the ailment of some others after being vaccinated. UALA militants killed in Goalpara

Security forces claimed to have killed two United Achik Liberation Army at an encounter in Goalpara district on Thursday.The encounter took place at Kongkhal area in the district bordering Meghalaya in the wee hours.Acting on a tip off, troops of army's Red Horns Division and police jointly conducted an operation in the tiny village where the encounter took place. The two Meghlaya-based militants died on the spot.Two 7.65 mm pistols, two hand grenades, a large amount of ammunition and other war-like stores were recovered during the operation.
