Actor joins TMC

Noted film actor Biju Phukan joined Trinamool Congress in presence of Mamata Banerjee at a function in Guwahati on Wednesday.

Phukan, who once contested the assembly polls from AGP told the TMC boss that he was prepared to fight the polls.

People thronged in thousands at the sarusajai Stadium to attend the TMC rally where Mamata Banerjee drew appreciation.

Ms. Banerjee clarified, while addressing a party rally in Guwahati, that Trinamool Congress was a part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government when it was headed by Atal Bihari Vajpayee but her party would not support any party that incites communal violence and hatred on the basis of religion, caste, creed or community.

Cabinet clears police commissionerate

A cabinet meeting on Sunday cleared the proposal for police commissionerate in Guwahati. Sources told Assam Times that the presided over by chief minister Tarun Gogoi at his Koinadhara residence in the evening, the meeting decided to introduce the system in Guwahati from January next year.All police stations and outposts in the Kamrup metro would come under the police commissioner who would be picked up from among an IGP level officer.

Downstream disaster not “reversible”

Despite repeated suggestions to halt the mega dam work by north east dam experts, NHPC and the Centre have categorically allayed the fear of downstream disaster of the controversial dam at Gerukamukh. Yet another expert panel is studying the entire issue of downstream impact of the NHPC-owned power project. Ration issue to raise in Parliament

Talking to reporters in Guwahati on Saturday, CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury said that the government will reverse the scheme only to safegaurd the interest of the owners. He said, "Subsidised foods is a part of wage agreement between workers and owners. It was a tripartite pact between workers, owners and government. Gogoi unhappy with GST on petroleum

Assam is set to lose a huge amount of Rs 1000 crore as revenue if chief minister Tarun Gogoi is to be believed. Addressing a press conference in Dispur on Saturday, Gogoi said that the Centre is contemplating to bring petroleum products under GST and that if the process is not stopped the state would be a big loser. According to Gogoi, the loss amount won’t be less than Rs 1,000 crore.Notably, under the proposed system in the new bill, the Union and state would be free to levy general sales tax on petroleum products at a low rate. Gogoi ready for cabinet rejig

ULFA-I’s ‘NO’ to Gerukamukh dam

ULFA’s anti-talk faction threatens to target NHPC if it resumes the mega dam construction at Gerukamukh. In a statement, the militant outfit’s vice president Paresh Asom said that they would not allow anybody to build mega dams in future.According to ULFA-I, the Gerukamukh project would not help Assam and instead it would have adverse impact in the downstream areas. It said it would support the dams only suggested by the experts.ULFA-I’s reaction came a day after the Centre and the anti-dam protesters agreed to set up an 8 member panel of experts to study the entire issue.

A border peace panel is touring the tense areas along the Assam-Nagaland border to restore confidence among the people.
