Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

ULFA claims responsibility of Demow blast

ULFA's Paresh Baruah faction owned up the responsibility of the grenade blast at the Demow police station on Tuesday. In a statement on Wednesday, the outfit alleged that they struck the police station in protest against the police excess on common people. Officer in charge of the police station Sanjib Baruah has been transferred on Wednesday. Notably, two motorcycle born youths lobbed the grenade at the police station premises which exploded with a huge sound. Security forces are conducting an intensified operation against the outfit.

NRC panel submits report to CM

The cabinet panel set up to the deal with the NRC issue submitted its report before chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Wednesday. Headed by senior cabinet minister Prithvi Majhi, the panel listened to the prominent citizens and several local organizations and political parties. After cabinet approval, the report would be sent to the Centre for seal of approval. If the things remain correct, the NRC update would take place from July.

Chopper service provider official arrested in Guwahati

Guwahati police have arrested a fraud on Wednesday after he duped a section of people promising chopper service to remote areas of Assam. Azara police arrested the fraud, identified as Manosij Roy who is the director with Rus Aviators got lakhs of rupees cleared from Dima Hasao autonomous council citing preparedness to introduce the service in the hills district. Police arrested him from Azara in Guwahati on the basis of the complaint lodged by the Dima Hasao autonomous council authorities. Roy was later remanded to judicial custody after he was produced before the court.

Encounter in Dhemaji: NDFB cadre arrested

Police arrested a hardcore NDFB cadre after a heavy exchange of firing in Dhemaji district on Wednesday. The fierce encounter took place in the afternoon during a search operation by the security forces. The militants managed to escape the spot amid darkness. The arrested militants was identified as Kumar Narjary who hails from Kokrajhar.

80,000 hectares of land under illegal occupation

Five neighbouring states have been illegally occupying over 80,000 hectares of land belonging to Assam. Disclosing this at the state legislative assembly, Assam Border Areas Minister of State Siddique Ahmed said that the land is under occupation of Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Tripura. The encroached lands are in 14 districts of Assam -- Tinsukia, Sibsagar, Jorhat, Golaghat, Kamrup Metro, Kamrup Rural, Goalpara, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Karbi Anglong, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj. Swimming as a sports in Assam

Swimming is one of the most participated sports in the world. In Assam it is also very popular but mainly as recreation. When I go and see hundreds of children enjoying themselves in the pool at various clubs and stadiums in Guwahati and entire Assam it seems very recreational. But in my opinion, if we take this sports with little more seriously, it can develop the standard of competitive swimming of this State. ULFA strikes again; blast at police station

After a brief halt ULFA’s anti-talk faction is trying to make its presence felt forcing the security forces to step in. Suspected ULFA militants night attacked a police station in Sivasagar district with a powerful grenade on Tuesday. The blast took place at Demow police station at around 8-30 in the evening. There was no casualty but it partially damaged the window panes of the police station. According to eyewitness, two youths born in motorcycle lobbed the grenade and vanished immediately after the blast. Security forces, however, have launched operation to nab the culprits.

Opp continues to boycott Assam Assembly

The Assam Assembly is holding the question hour session on Wednesday even as the Opposition members are boycotting the proceedings a day after Speaker Pranab Gogoi expelled the AIUDF members. Only the ruling party members were holding the question hours period in the absence of the opposition members. Notably, the Speaker expelled the AIUDF members on Tuesday and snubbed them for craw like manner in the House where the Opposition members staged walk out.

Leopard ruthlessly beaten up to death

A full grown leopard was killed and four others have been injured when a section of local residents pounded on these creatures in Guwahati on Sunday. The incident took place in at Garobasti in Durga Sarobar area near Maligaon at around 4 in the afternoon. Local residents in large number came out as when they came to see the leopards in the afternoon. Meanwhile, panic grips the local residents at Adingiri following the incident that sent shockwaves across the state.

KYKL militant captured in Guwahati

Security forces have apprehended a Manipur-based KYKL militant from Guwahati on Saturday. Acting on a tip off, police captured the militant in South Sarania and seized a laptop, two mobiles along with lots of incriminating documents from his possession. Identified as Rajkumr Ishwarchandra, he has been hiding in Guwahati for the last three months. Interrogation is continuing.
