Role of AASU in Assam

The All Assam Student’s Union (AASU) is a mouthpiece of the people of Assam. Since its inception the AASU has been fighting for the cause of Assam and making its presence felt politically in the entire nation. After the anti foreigner’s movement in Assam which was triggered off by infiltration of Bangladeshis from the border areas, a fear psychosis among the Assamese of losing their identities and cultural bondings led to the formation of AASU. The students of Assam united to form the AASU and lead the people of Assam in their struggle for protecting their identity. It resulted in the signing of the Assam accord. Though the AASU has undergone many splits and various other student organizations like Tai Ahom Students Union, All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) have come into existence, the AASU is still following the chosen path of being with the people of Assam and respecting the peoples’ democratic ideals. Though now its role has become even more manifolds with Assam facing newer challenges but the AASU still holds a beacon to the Assamese community during thick and thin high and low.

The AASU raises its voice every time it feels Assam is threatened by external or internal factors. Whether it is urging the central government to implement the Assam Accord, evict illegal Bangladeshis to save Assam or to protest for any injustice to its people, the AASU is the voice of Assam. It has also taken upon itself to uphold the Assamese culture and tradition and is working with the state and central government to maintain peace and unity in the state.

However it should be more vocal regarding the mayhem unfolded by extremists groups which has resulted in the loss of life of many innocent Assamese as well as Hindi speaking people. Instead of calling for bandhs to protest against issues it can resort to protest marches, dharnas etc for then people take notice of the cause behind the protests whereas bandhs not only effect the daily wage earners it also fails to register itself in the minds of the people as it becomes just another holiday for them. Bandhs also affect the state’s economy and slows down the development process of the state.

Moreover, women representation in AASU is quite negligible therefore it should take measures to ensure equal representation of female members by encouraging them.

The AASU being a student’s body has an important role to play in the lives of the student community therefore it should lead by example. It has done commendable work by recently felicitating meritorious student and therefore inspired them to achieve nobler goals.

The people of Assam have found a mouthpiece in the AASU and the future of Assam depends on these students who would carry forward the heritage of Assam by righteous means.

Well written.. The representation of lady is not so law in AASU..In different committe at district level or ancholik or branch level, there are various girl representatives. But yes in central body no girl representation is now. Moreover any student without relating any political party can be a part of AASU. We too thanx AASU as atleast for this organisation something can hope for the benefit of Assam. Even already various good and comandable works done by our loving this org, ie, AASU. Thank u to AASU too.

Import files gutted in Dispur fire

Much to everybody’s utter surprise, several crucial files have been reduced to ashes when a fire broke out in the third floor of the high security Assam Secretariat in the Dispur area in Guwahati on Wednesday. The fire broke out at night despite heavy presence of security force. The fire broke out in the Water Rescources Department on the third floor of Block B of the secretariat and several files have been destroyed in the blaze. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained and forensic department personnel are investigating the case.

Four Manipur insurgents held in Guwahati

Four hardcore Manipur insurgents were arrested during a joint operation by the security forces on Thursday. They include the KCP finance secretary who has been camping in Lachitnagar area in the city. The three others also belong to KCP.

Musical evening from North-east at Delhi

The India International Centre and the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research bring together singers and musicians from the North East in a musical evening to pay tribute to the legendary Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, perform some of his repertoire as well as their own compositions. The performances are on February 18 at the IIC main auditorium. Bhaichung Bhutia promoted Guwahati school

Pailan World School (PWS) has organised an educational programme at a city hotel on February 12 which was attended by its Bhaichung Bhutia, its brand ambassador. He spoke about the school and its initiatives related to football. Woman commits suicide on rail track

A woman committed suicide by coming under a speeding train in Halmira area of Golaghat today morning. The woman, identified as Forida Begum (55), a resident of Halmira, was ran over by a train near No.3 railway gate. Local people suspected that it happened at 5am when it’s slightly dark and in an area that people don’t normally cross. It is to be mention that Forida Begum has lost her husband 20 days ago and her sister also left her 2 days back and such cruel tragedy made her take such an extreme step.

All-breed dog show held at AAU, Khanapara

An All Breed Dog Show was organised at the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara on February 11. The show was organized in the College Play Ground on the side lights of the North-East Agri-Fair, 2012 hosted by the Assam Agricultural University. The show was inaugurated by Major General G.S. Chima , GOC, 51 sub-area, Narangi as the Chief Guest. Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah, Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University also graced the function. 1 dead; 40 injured in KA mishap

One person died and around 40 others have been injured when a bus slipped into a deep gorge in Karbi Anglong district on Saturday. The mishap took place in the evening at the Tika hills near Baithalangsu where one person died on the spot and the injured passengers have been rushed to the hospital. It was alleged that the Baithalangsu hospital has no staff to look after the injured passengers.

EFA lauds sports potential in Jorhat

Equestrian Federation of Assam has admitted that Assam has lots of scope for developing equestrian as a sport and its youths could be groomed for participating in international events. Talking to reporters on Saturday, Equestrian Federation of Assam president Manoj Jalan said that the organization has started the sport in s Jorhat district in view of the scope with the various indigenous tribes. He said that Jorhat has scope with its ethnic youths, particularly of the Mising community, along the banks of river Brahmaputra and in Majuli island traditionally riding horses without saddle.

Assam to hike NREGA wages

Dispur has prepared a draft proposal to revise minimum wages for workers and employees engaged under NREGA under the relevant provisions of Minimum Wages Act, 1948. According to official sources, the minimum rates of wages fixed for different categories are Rs 208 per day for skilled work/clerical work and Rs 150 per day for semi-skilled/unskilled supervisory work. A minumum rate of Rs 130 per day was proposed for unskilled workers who are engaged in agriculture, construction or maintenace of roads or in building operation, stone breaking or crushing, flood control, irrigation and public health engineering.
