IIT-Guwahati convocation Monday

Guwahati IIT is gearing up for the 17th convocation ceremony slated for Monday.

IIT-G officials told Assam Times that the event is being organized at the Dr Bhupen Hazarika auditorium where Union Minister of Human Resource Development Smriti Irani will attend as the chief guest.

The Chairman of Board of Governors, IIT Guwahati, Dr Rajendra Pratap Singh, will also be present at the convocation.

Altogether 1117 students – 578 Bachelor of Technology (BTech) and Bachelor of Design (BDes), 24 Master of Arts (MA), 124 Master of Science (MSc), 267 Master of Technology (MTech) and Master of Design (MDes) and 124 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – will receive their degrees at the convocation.

NSCN-K rebel hurt in Nagaland shoot out

Kohima: A few rebels are believed to have been hurt as they were locked in a heavy exchange of firing in Nagaland on Wednesday. The incident took place in Tobu area in Mon district where both side had a fierce encounter from Tuesday.  According to sources, the Armed rebels suddenly sprang on a group of Assam Rifles on a patrolling duty in the evening amid stepped up security to ensure a peaceful I-Day celebrations in the state on Wednesday. The rebel outfit in search of a greater Nagalim has yet to issue any statement. The para military forces have also not divulged anything in detail.

JFA urges every Indian to observe I-Day

Guwahati: Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) appeals to the people of northeast India to celebrate the 73rd Independence Day on 15 August 2019 in a befitting manner. The scribe’s body argues that I-Day and Republic Day are two auspicious occasions for every Indian and they should pay respects to the martyrs of freedom struggle hoisting the National flag on both the sacred days. Incidentally, many separatist militant outfits of the region continue their diktats to sabotage the celebrations of I-Day. JFA demands action against scribe-assailants

Guwahati: Journalists’ Forum Assam (JFA) expressed concerns over incidents of attacks on scribes across the country and urged the concerned authorities to investigate the motives behind those assaults and punish the culprits accordingly. The last incident has been reported from Bihar, where Pradeep Mandal was shot at by two culprits at Sarsopahi Bazar locality of Madhubani district on 28 July. Pradeep (36 years old), who used to contribute for Hindi daily Dainik Jagaran, received severe injuries and was rushed to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital for treatments. Down Town Hospital to conduct tomorrow’s media OPD clinic

Guwahati: City based Down Town Hospital will conduct tomorrow’s (26 July 2019) media OPD clinic at Guwahati Press Club, where ENT specialists Dr Chatrajeet Talukdar, MS and Dr Siva Balaji Muvvala will be available for consultations and preliminary treatments to scribes along with their family members. The participants will also get the opportunity to check their blood pressure in the camp between 4 and 6 pm.

New book on Assam Agitaion

The Asam Agitation which started in 1979 and ended with The Assam Accord in 1985, is a major timeline of history of Assam. Earthquake may be the cause of Brahmaputra water turned muddy and black: Chinese Geologist

Recent Earthquakes in Tibet are most probale cause of  muddy water flowing through the Brahmaputra for last two weeks. Chand Kumar Duarah, a science journalist based in Guwahati said that most of geologist and experts believe earthquake and aftermaths are responsible for the phenomenon. Yang Yong, a geologist and Yarlung Zangbo (known as in China) expert  said muddy water might highly be caused by the recent earthquake in Linzhi, Tibet. As on 17th July 2019, total 4,626 number of villages in 114 revenue circles of 29 number of Districts Viz. Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Sonitpur, Darrang, Udalguri, Baksa, Barpeta, Nalbari, Chirang, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Kamrup, Kamrup (M), Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Golaghat, Majuli, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Cachar, Karbi Anglong and Karimganj of Assam have been affected in the Flood.
