Animal sacrifice in Durga puja strikes no less shock and anger among many organizations and individuals across the state.
Dozens of buffalos and goats are being sacrificed in many temples in the name of Durga puja from Tuesday. A glimpse of the buffalos, goats, ducks and pigeons being kept for sacrifice at the historic Kamakhya temple premises really shocks the animal lovers. Same it is in many places where the same shocking tradition is allowed in Durga Puja.
“We are helpless. We have been dead opposed to the tradition of animal sacrifice. But the organizers have been refusing to read our campaign. This is a matter of grave concern,” said Shailen Saikia from Sivasagar district who has been campaigning againstanimal sacrifice.
Juli Chutia from Kakojan area in Jorhat told Assam Times that the people must understand the reality. “The things have undergone a sea change now. Everywhere change reigns supreme. But we don’t understand why we are still stick to this tradition. Our minds need to be changed.”
“It would take time to end the tradition of animal sacrifice. If 1000 buffalos and 5000 goats were sacrificed ten years ago, now 50 buffalos and 100 goats are being sacrificed,” said Pranjal Bora from Nagaon.
Bora who is running a non governmental organization told Assam Times over telephone that a massive campaign is the need of the hour againstanimal sacrifice which has yet to take place. “The campaign should have taken place at least 3 months before the commencement of the Durga puja. People from the nook and corner of the state should be aware of it. But I do hope that after 20 years the tradition of animal sacrifice would die down,” he said.

I think it is time to do away with animal sacrifice. It is a barbaric practise.It should stop both for hindu festivals as well as for other religions like for bakrid.

About 150 years back it was a 'religious custom' in India to force widows to get burnt on their husband's funeral pyre (Sati) today we consider it a barbaric tradition. Similarly, years from now, our future generations will look back at us and call us barbaric.
A god who wants the blood of an innocent animal to satisfy him/her cannot be called a god. It can only be a devil/demon. Rather the people who sacrifice animals (be it Bakr Id or Durga Pooja) are devils who sully the name of their god with their crime of killing innocent animals.
Janmastami is being celebrated with much traditional religious fervor across the state to mark the birth day of the Lord Krishna on Monday. Well decorated temples and namghars are teeming with devotees from Sunday night. A series of cultural functions are also lined up on the occasion. The focal point of attraction is the ISKCON temple at Ulubari in Guwahati where people have been thronging in thousands to attend the celebration. The flood-hit areas in Nagaon district are getting army help to get rid of the ravaging flood waves. The district administration sought Army to help rescue 145 marooned people at Kalapani village in Koliabor circle in the district where unprecedented rain resulted in inundation over a large area. Troops from Gajraj Corps were requisitioned around 8pm on August 16 and the Army immediately deployed a flood relief column under Lt Col Pinaki Chakraborthy from Misa Army Camp at night. The Army has so far evacuated 145 civilians — including 30 men, 55 women and 60 children — to a relief camp and provided first-aid and relief material.
Assam continues to grapple with a grim flood situation where the toll has gone up to 3. The third victim is a 25-year youth at Nauboicha in Lakhimpur. The worst affected districts in the second wave of flood are Lakhimpur and Dhemaji where the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are flowing above the danger mark. In Lakhimpur and Dhemahji districts, over 2 lakh people have been rendered homeless and the surging flood waters have damaged over 15,000 hectares of crop lands. In Dhemaji, 76,894 people of 222 villages under Dhemaji, Sisiborgaon and Jonai revenue circles were affected by the floods till Monday.
Chief minister Tarun Gogoi is on a stock taking visit to Uriam Ghat area today a week after Naga miscreants killed at least 14 people. Apart from reviewing the situation with top ranked police and civil officials, the chief minister is visiting the relief camps. On the other hand, the Assam government claimed to have restored peace and normalcy in the troubled torn areas bordering Nagaland. The authorities have urged the panic stricken people to go back to their homes.
Tension refuses to die down in Golaghat district along the Assam-Nagaland border. Two more bodies were recovered on Sunday who were believed to have been killed by the Naga miscreants. Local residents in Uriam Ghat area with the help of security forces recovered the bodies from Chainpur village where the miscreants unleashed a reign of terror on August 12. The authorities have confirmed the number of injured from 3 to 7 in the attack. The night curfew from 6 pm to 6 am in the area along the inter-state border will continue in order to avoid any untoward development. /
The Assam government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 8 lakh each to the families of persons killed in the Assam-Nagaland border violence. Those injured in the miscreant attack would get Rs 50,000 each. Apart from it, the government will also give a grant of Rs 50,000 to every family, whose houses were burnt. A survey is underway on the number of houses.
Flood waters are wreaking havoc in Kaziranga National Park. The famed abode of the one- horned rhino has come under the surging waters after the river Brahmaputra started flowing above the danger level. Park authorities told Assam Times that the flood inundated low-lying areas in almost all the ranges with the animals moving to the highlands in neighbouring Karbi Anglong district. Water has entered 50 camps across the Park with three camps evacuated in the Northern range. The flood have forced many birds and animals to be migrated to the highland across NH-37. To check speeding vehicles barricades have been set up and time-cards introduced to control the speed of the vehicles.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi asked for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal intervention to restore peace in Uriamghat along the boiling Assam-Nagaland border. In a letter to the Prime Minister on Saturday, Gogoi requested Modi to send additional ten companies of CRPF personnel in the violence hit areas for rapid reinforcement of security along with setting up of security pickets in the affected villages.
