ULFA-I uses guerrilla tactic only for self defence and not for waging any war against India, said Dr Abhizeet Asom.

In a message sent to media on the Protest Day on Saturday, the ULFA-I chairman said that the outfit has been struggling to save the rights of the indigenous people of Assam.

According to the elusive ULFA-I leader, the "immature" student leaders who spearheaded the Assam Agitation surrendered before New Delhi when they signed an accord to deport Bangladeshi aliens in 1985 with Rajiv Gandhi.

"However, India in contrast is seeking military solution to our legitimate struggle to establish our birthright as enshrined in international statues and our indigenous masses are responding to the call of the hour to own what belong to them," said the ULFA supremo.

He further spoke of the India, Bangladesh land deal with reference to the history of East Pakistan. The outfit also said that the move to give refugee status to the non-Muslim Bangladeshis are strange.

Poll candidate among 5 killed in GNLA attack

SHILLONG:Five people including a poll candidate in Meghalaya died in a powerful explosion in the poll bound north eastern state on Sunday. According to information, suspected GNLA rebels exploded the bomb at Samanda at 7.30 in the evening where NCP candidate from Williamnagar Jonathone N Sangma along with two security guards and three others died on the spot. Sangma, was believed to have received threat from the rebel outfit as he filed nomination papers. Even the rebel warned the voters' of dire consequences if Sangma was voted to power. CPM worker injured in Tripura poll violence

PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: A CPM worker sustained serious injury when two group of political parties clashed with each other on Sunday when the north eastern state was going to the assembly polls in 59 constituencies. The clash broke out at Golaghati area in Dayaram para in the afternoon. According to allegations, a group of BJP workers suddenly sprang upon their CPM counterparts where he sustained serious injury. Identified as Pulin Bardhan, he was rushed to the hospital where he is battling with death.

Tripura polling over; eyes fixed on Mar 3

PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: Polling is underway in Tripura on brisk note from 7 in the morning to decide on the fate of 59 legislators in the 60 member assembly on Sunday. According to state election authority, the polling is peaceful where 2,536,589 people are exercising their franchise at 3,714 booths from 7 in the morning.   The voters in large number thronged the assigned booths much ahead of the time. PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: Amid a mammoth security arrangement voting is underway in Tripura to elect 59 legislators in the 60 member assembly across the north eastern state on Sunday. Altogether 25,36,589 voters are exercising their franchise at 3,417 polling booths to decide on the fate of 292 candidates from 7 in the morning.Voters in large number are waiting in a serpentine queue to vote in their assigned booths from early in the morning where BJP takes on the ruling Left Front.

Gang of gunmen strikes terror in Kakopothar

DIBRUGARH: A gang of gunmen unleashed a reign of terror in a remote village in Dibrugarh on Saturday triggering sensation in the entire district. As many as 10 armed men stormed into a village in Kakopothar area in the wee hours in search of someone striking panic among the villagers.  Towards the morning, these unidentified gunmen took away a local youth Suranjeet Konwar from his house which is still remaining clueless. Pallab pushed back from Tripura

AGARTALA: After interrogating for two hours at a police station in Agartala, the election observer asked Pallab Lochan Das to leave Tripura on Friday night. The power minister was caught in a remote area in Dhalai district in the poll bound north eastern state acting on the allegations of violating model code of conduct since he was allegedly distributing cash among the voters. He was caught by local people and Left activists with the car in which he was travelling with a fake pass shown to have been signed by Dhalai SP.
