Scribes remember Dipak Mahanta

City based scribes and well wishers of Dipak Mahanta, who had recently died in a road mishap, paid homage to him in a function organized at Guwahati Press Club on Saturday. The attending journalists, while mourning Mahanta’s untimely death, emphasized on preservation of his creations for the benefit of future generation. Mahanta, who was a dedicated theatre activist and a journalist penned, designed and directed a number of plays including ‘Ulanga Roja’, ‘Malati Mem’, ‘Holi’, ‘Pinhole Camera’, ‘Gajapuria’, ‘Bhotaram Totaram’, ‘Aadipath’, ‘Dhaniramor Theatre’, ‘Kurma Avatar’, ‘Tejimola’, ‘Dhodar Alir Tender’, ‘Jadughar’ etc.

He also prepared scripts for hundreds of documentaries relating to various socio-cultural issues. Graduated from Biswanath College in 1979, Mahanta was partially involved with the profession of journalism during his productive days through different newspapers like ‘Mohajati’, ‘Agnigarh’, ‘Boodhbar’, ‘Natun Dainik, ‘Dainik Pratibimba’ and ‘Asomiya Pratidin’. He joined NewsTimeAssam as a producer and started television journalism career. Lately Mahanta was involved with AssamTalks as a senior producer.

The speakers including Manas Kumar Mahanta, Raman Bora, Sanjib Phukan, Mrinal Bora, Rupam Barua, Jagadindra Raichoudhiry, Nava Thakuria, Jesim Raja etc highlighted the simplicity of Mahanta, even though he had to fight all along for survival and creations.

Meanwhile, Mahanta’s family members have performed the rituals at his Tezpur residence with Adyashraddha today and Matsyasparsha scheduled for Monday next.

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday gave his assent to prosecute Rakesh Paul who has been languishing in jail for his alleged involvement in the cash for job scam in APSC. According to information, the presidential ascent would now enable the court to initial trial against the jailed APSC chairman. 10 injured as IPFT men clash with police

BY PRASENJIT SAHA AGARTALA: At least ten people including police officers sustained when a group of IPFT activists clashed with security forces in Tripura on Friday.The clash took place at noon in Takarjala area in Sipajala district in the morning where a section of the tribal outfit's activists turned violent as they were on the way to join a poll rally. Some of them had an altercation with the local residents on the road and as the policemen on duty tried to deal with the mild quarrel, they turned violent and took on them. As many as three police officers fell injured. They have been admitted in the hospital for treatment.

4 lakh fake job cards scrapped

GUWAHATI: The Assam Government on Friday confirmed cancellation of 4 lakh job card which the panchayat rural development department identified as fake. The department officials apprised it to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal who reviewed functionings on Thursday. The officials informed the chief minister that during the current fiscal, 87,299 self help groups have been formed against 20,762 SHGs during 2016-17. Arms smuggler held in Agartala

PRASENJEET SAHA AGARTALA: Despite round-the-clock vigil in the run up to the assembly polls slated for February 23, arms smugglers seem to have moving in Tripura.
