End of Darkness! Assam Dazzles in Dipawali

Dipawali is back with millions of lamps illuminating Assam in the darkness of night along with other parts of the country on Thursday. 

Despite administrative restrictions sounds of firecrackers have mingled in the air suggesting that a section of the people are not in a mood to halt. 

The north eastern state transformed into a different world on Thursday evening when rows and rows of Diyas(lamps) along with varieties of colourful decorations  started dazzling in the nook and corner to celebrate the festival of light. 

Men and women alike made serpentine queues for Diwali shopping to buy gifts for the near and dear ones on thr occasion. 

“ I bought sweets to give as gift to my parents since they can't come out. This is a nice occasion indeed,” said Aparajita Saikia, a college in Guwahati’s RG Baruah Road. 

“It's amazing to catch a glimpse of the festival this evening. I find no wrong with the decision to stop fire cracker bursting which results in huge amount of pollution. 

“Sans fire cracker bursting we can celebrate the festival of light,” said Pallab Thakur in Tinsukia town where the authority have prohibited bursting of fire crackers. 

“The festival marks the home coming of Ram Chandra ending thr 14 year old exile. May this festival mark the return of peace. This is what I do hope” Sasha Kamal Das, a retired school teacher in Jorhat. 

The pompous celebration of Dipawali gives Hojai a new look with the people of all ages greeting each other on the occasion on Thursday. 

Simultaneously, the Hindus have been holding Kali puja to appease the goddess to win over evils. The twin occasions have given a section of businessmen a field day to mint money. 

Banana trees are being sold out like hot cakes in the urban areas where the customers have to buy a banana tree for ₹100 to decorate the front side of their houses. Same it is in the case of the earthen lamps where the porters and the sellers have been minting money. 

Many organizations and individuals have welcomed the decision to restrict the bursting of firecrackers to avoid air pollution. But that has not dampened the joy of the festival.

Worker falls from tree, dead

Hojai: A worker died when he fell from a tree he was cutting in Hojai sending a pall of gloom on Sunday.   The incident took place at Dimarupar near Nilbagan near Murajhar in the District.As per reports, One Shirajuddin (55), a daily wage earner sustained serious injury after he fell from the tree at Mahjibur Rahman's house at Dimarupar at around 12 in the afternoon.Immediately  Shiraj uddin was admitted at Nilbagan Mahatma Gandhi Model Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.Murajhar Police took the body and  has sent  for postmertem at Nagaon Civil Hospital.According to Mahjibur Rahman, three days before he said Shiraj Uddin to cut some trees at his home...

Allegation against headmaster

Hojai:  Sensation prevailed in Jamunamukh under Hojai district when a case of Sexual Assault came in light on Saturday. A Class 5  minor from Borzar Primary School in Jamunamukh under Hojai District  was allegedly sexually molested by headmaster of the school  Maheshwar Medhi, where she was studying. Free Health Check Up Camp in Hojai

Hojai: A  free general health check-up camp was organised at Don Bosco High School in Hojai on Friday to Commemorate the World Health Day, Which is Observed on April 7 worldwide. Hojai woman, child rescued in Siliguri

Hojai: In yet another major achievement, the Hojai police have rescued a woman and her child  from the clutches of traffickers from a red light area in Siluguri. According to additional SP Ajagwran Basumatary who spoke to media after the achievement, the woman and her child are being brought back safely. Beware illicit liquor traders

Hojai: The Hojai police in Doboka have seized a huge quantity of illicit foreign liquor during a raid at a few hotels on Wednesday. Led by DSP Binita Nath, a team of police raided the hotels on the roadside of National Highway No 36 at night in Jabrakhuwa and seized the foreign liquors illegally stored by the traders. More raids are expected during the next couple of days since the authority wants the illicit foreign trade to be dealt with firmly. 

Nagaon girl gangraped in Hojai

HOJAI: Amid simmering shock and anger over sexual crimes across the nation two miscreants allegedly gangraped a girl in Hojai before being dumped on the National Highway No 54 on Wednesday. Local residents spotted the girl in dire straights in the morning who called up police and rushed her to the Nilbagan Model Hospital. According to information, two youths took away the girl from Samoguri in Nagaon district on Tuesday and gangraped at night and dumped her by the roadside. On receipt of the formal complaint, the Hojai police is looking for the duo who gangraped the girl.

Electrocution death in Hojai

Hojai: Once again the power department has shown its utter inefficiency in Hojai where one person was electrocuted to death when workers were on repairing duty on Tuesday. Identified as Mohan Lal Das, the 45 year old electrocuted when he was caught by the 440 voltage power line of 440 at Raikata Village in Hojai in the afternoon as the workers were on repairing duty. According to information, when the workers were repairing the line damaged by the April 13 storm suddenly the powerline came into the contact of current due to their negligence.
