End of Darkness! Assam Dazzles in Dipawali

Dipawali is back with millions of lamps illuminating Assam in the darkness of night along with other parts of the country on Thursday. 

Despite administrative restrictions sounds of firecrackers have mingled in the air suggesting that a section of the people are not in a mood to halt. 

The north eastern state transformed into a different world on Thursday evening when rows and rows of Diyas(lamps) along with varieties of colourful decorations  started dazzling in the nook and corner to celebrate the festival of light. 

Men and women alike made serpentine queues for Diwali shopping to buy gifts for the near and dear ones on thr occasion. 

“ I bought sweets to give as gift to my parents since they can't come out. This is a nice occasion indeed,” said Aparajita Saikia, a college in Guwahati’s RG Baruah Road. 

“It's amazing to catch a glimpse of the festival this evening. I find no wrong with the decision to stop fire cracker bursting which results in huge amount of pollution. 

“Sans fire cracker bursting we can celebrate the festival of light,” said Pallab Thakur in Tinsukia town where the authority have prohibited bursting of fire crackers. 

“The festival marks the home coming of Ram Chandra ending thr 14 year old exile. May this festival mark the return of peace. This is what I do hope” Sasha Kamal Das, a retired school teacher in Jorhat. 

The pompous celebration of Dipawali gives Hojai a new look with the people of all ages greeting each other on the occasion on Thursday. 

Simultaneously, the Hindus have been holding Kali puja to appease the goddess to win over evils. The twin occasions have given a section of businessmen a field day to mint money. 

Banana trees are being sold out like hot cakes in the urban areas where the customers have to buy a banana tree for ₹100 to decorate the front side of their houses. Same it is in the case of the earthen lamps where the porters and the sellers have been minting money. 

Many organizations and individuals have welcomed the decision to restrict the bursting of firecrackers to avoid air pollution. But that has not dampened the joy of the festival.

Protest march in Nilbagan

Hojai: More than 2000 people took to the streets in Nilbagan area in Hojai on Monday evening demanding justice for the Asifa Bano along with other victims of sexual crimes across the country. With banners and play cards, the youths took out the candle light march at the initiatives of the local youths of Nilbagan which ended at the Tinali. The protesters shouted slogans demanding justice for the Unnai and Kathua victims saying that the perpetrators must be sent to the gallows. “We demand Justice. Asifa and other victims must get the justice. We won't relent until and unless those responsible are not given capital punishment,” said a protester.

Kids perform bihu in school

Hojai: The Kids Of Kinder Garden School in Hojai  Celebrated Rongali Bihu with traditional fervour on Saturday. Dressed in traditional Assamese attire, the  students performed bihu huchori pulling many people both inside and outside the campus. Hailstorm turns Hojai into Kashmir

HOJAI: Assam BJP unit has expelled two leaders of the Hojai Municipality Board alleging anti party activities triggering no less crises in the civic body.In a letter circulated on April 5, 2018, party general secretary Dilip Saikia said HMB chairperson Mamata Dey and Vice chairman Samir Sarkar have been expelled for involving in the anti party activities.The duo faced the action after the consent from state party president Ranjit Kumar Das. Hojai: The Hojai police have arrested 3 people for using false documents to update NRC. Identified as Subhas Das, Raju Das and Hemanta Nath, they were arrested before sending to jail on Saturday acting on a complaint of using false legacy data to the NRC officials. The police on Friday received a complaint from Ratan Das of Gobindapally  alleging that the trio have used his father’s legacy data to update NRC which came to light  during the ongoing family tree verification process. Car lifters held in Hojai

Hojai: The Daboka Police in Hojai caught two notorious car lifters acting on a false complaint filed by the duo on Thursday. Identified as Aamir Hussain and Emamul Hussain, they lifted a car and sold it in Dimapur and lodged an FIR at Daboka Police Station on Wednesday alleging that their Bolero Pick Up AS 02 BC 1459 was forcibly taken away by robbers at Shalbagan area as they were going towards Dimapur. Rape and murder attempt rocks Doboka

HOJAI: The Doboka police in Hojai is looking for Jotan Debnath a day after he tried to kill his niece for failing to sexually exploit her. The incident took place on Tuesday at a tiny hamlet in Doboka were Juton tried to rape the minor girl in the evening in the absence of her parents. As he tried to assault her for refusing compromise, the victim ran out of her home to be rescued by the police who have registered a case.
