Assam has been ranked among the bottom five states of the country in crucial development indicators including health, education and economic growth, according to a fresh NITI Aayog assessment.
The report placed Assam 26th in health and well-being, 25th in education, and 23rd in economic development. On gender equality and zero hunger, the state was positioned at 25th and 22nd respectively.
The poor performance has raised concern over the state’s planning and budgetary priorities, despite official claims of inclusive growth. Experts have pointed out that school enrolment, institutional health services and poverty reduction continue to remain below the national average.
NITI Aayog’s Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) index, however, noted some improvement, upgrading Assam to the “Front Runner” category with a score of 65 in 2023–24, compared to 49 in 2018. Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Jorhat emerged as better-performing districts, while Kamrup Metro lagged behind.
The findings underline that Assam continues to struggle in key human development sectors, requiring urgent corrective measures.

Tinsukia, March 22: Suspected militants of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) (ULFA-I) launched a pre-dawn attack on an Assam Police commando camp in the Jagun area of Tinsukia district, leaving at least four security personnel injured.
