APCC Holds Press Conference Alleging Irregularities Against Assam CM

Guwahati, 4 February: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on Tuesday held a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan, during which party leaders made a series of allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and launched an online platform to collect information related to their claims.

The press conference was attended by former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress election observer Bhupesh Baghel, All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi, and other senior party leaders. During the event, a video titled “Who Is Himanta Biswa Sarma?” was released, followed by the launch of a QR-code-enabled template and a public complaint platform.

According to the APCC, the video outlines what the party described as multiple facets of the Chief Minister’s political and public life. The Congress leaders stated that the material is intended to present their perspective on the Chief Minister’s conduct and governance.

Addressing the media, APCC President Gaurav Gogoi alleged that the Chief Minister and his family members have acquired large tracts of land across Assam through irregular means. He said the party has been collecting information from the public and has formed a team to verify the details. To facilitate this process, the Congress launched a website, whoishbs.com, through which citizens can submit information related to land and property ownership. A phone number was also released for the same purpose.

Gogoi further claimed that, based on information received so far, the Chief Minister and his family members have allegedly acquired around 12,000 bighas of land across the state, and that details regarding land-use conversion would be shared later.

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, speaking at the event, criticised the Assam government and accused the Chief Minister of corruption and misuse of power. He also made broader political remarks linking state and national issues, including references to international developments and economic policies, and alleged adverse impacts on Indian farmers.

AICC observer Jitendra Singh echoed the allegations, claiming that the Chief Minister and his family members had accumulated significant land holdings and business interests. He further alleged that the state government had failed to fulfil several promises and accused the Chief Minister of political opportunism.

Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia, said the Congress would continue to raise these issues and release more information in the coming days, urging the public to assess the claims independently.

Responding to questions from the media, Gaurav Gogoi also addressed allegations made by the Chief Minister against Congress leaders, stating that the government should clarify its position through official channels if the issues raised were serious.

The press conference was attended by MPs Pradyut Bordoloi and Rakibul Hussain, several MLAs, APCC office-bearers, and senior party leaders. The event was moderated by APCC Media and Communications Department Chairman Bedabrat Bora.

No immediate response was available from the Chief Minister or the state government regarding the allegations made at the press conference.
