The ULFA confusion

Everything seems to be utter confusion. If you call it a mystery, nobody can easily crack it and will not be able to do so. ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa, Pradip Gogoi, Mithinga Daimary et all are preparing the massive blueprint to be guided by Jatita Abhibartan leader Dr Hiren Gohain and government interlocutor P C Halder. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is waiting to give the political touch and to extract electoral mileage thereof.

The things are understood to have moved in right direction. The process touches touches even a few elusive hardcore aides of commander in chief Paresh Baruah. They include 709 battalion commander Hira Sarania. Hira aided and guided by the jailed top guns has been coordinating the entire process. The huge blueprint came to light when around 19 ULFA topguns and their family members shifted to Assam without the knowledge of Paresh Baruah. They incude Anu Buragohain, Bhaity Baruah, Biju Deka. With active but tacit support from BSF and Assam police, they sneaked in to Assam from across the Indo-Bangla border. Later, they stormed into Nalbari and Barama areas very recently.

Army's Dogra regiment is providing them security in the lower Assam areas. In bid to cover up the blueprint Anu Buragohain said they have only shifted the camp for security reasons. But it fails to buy any support. Chief minister Tarun Gogoi reads it a positive sign while Asom Jatiyo Abhibarton chief convener Dr Hiren Gohain said they have come only after the appeal of the central ledership. What makes out assessment very clear is the sudden visit of government interlocutor PC Halder who visited Rajkhowa on Monday inside the Guwahati Central Jail.

In yet another development, a 20 member team of the outfit's 28th battalion have sneaked into upper Assam from across the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh inter state border. The purpose is understood to be same: they want Rajkhowa to follow. With this, Paresh Baruah remains with only Jibon Moran, Antu Chaudang,Bijoy Chinse. Nobody knows when they would do an Anu. But Barua is still firm. He will carry forward the struggle. But for whom? Has he ever tried to know how many people have sent him to the jungle to fetch an independent Assam?

-- ULFA leaders, what next?? How you celebrate April 7 ?? -- April 7, 1979 was the day when the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) was established. Now that a section of ULFA leaders have come to the discussion table and dropping the idea of liberation from central government of India, what can be the alternative name of this organization by those moderate leaders? How can the energy of ULFA be chanelised. This should be pondered upon and this April 7, 2011 we should know the decision. Can it become the “United Front of Asom” ( UFA ) or “Asom Army” to safeguard the interest of the people of Assam ? Assam and neighbouring areas, in the wake of being a part of a huge country like India needs a parallel organization apart from political parties to safeguard the concerns of the people of the region. We need a pressure group. It should not disappear altogether because the name brand name ‘ULFA’ itself helps students and people from Assam tackle hooligans in other parts of India . No one fears Assam Police, but say ULFA, and criminals in India fear to harm you.

Common people of Assam do want peace. Are the parties involved-ULFA, UlFA on negotiation, ULFA on seize fire and Government along with Jatiya Abhibartan leaders listening? Every one has his own agenda, agenda to gain something either politically or financially. A few amongst these groups/persons are thinking themselves as visionary. But none is thinking to give the sigh of relief to the people of Assam. And definitely, nothing fruitful will come out from all these fiasco and the people will be the most sufferer again. But the dilemma is: everyone trying to project himself as the messiah of the Assamese people though people know very well that nothing will change. Did common people of Assam ever invite anyone to fight for freedom? Are anyone invited by the people of Assam to negotiate or surrender?. But the truth is : all parties are just trying to catch a fish, some groups named it negotiation for peace and for some other groups, it is the fight for freedom. Are anyone there who really care for common people of Assam?

The entire incident of bloodbath in Balajan, in fact, is shrouded in mystery. The ground situation seems to have suggested utter cluelessness. The picture is still hazy. The statement issued by NDFB-S has further made the state of affairs more confusing. Security forces smartly claimed to have killed one of the perpetrators minutes after he along with his fellow militants unleashed terror with firing and bombing in the weekly market. Then how his fellows have managed to vanished from the spot? Why an intensive combing operation has been failing to trace down the remaining perpetrators? These things need to be clear. Talking to a section of media, some eye witnesses maintained that police...
Who is behind the gory bloodbath in Balajan where 14 people died and several others sustained injury? Initially, the needle of suspicion pointed towards NDFB-S who out rightly rejected the claim. The inputs are now contradictory making the scene more confusing. Some circles tried to call it the handiwork of the fundamentalist forces. Some of them talked of a suicide squad attack. But dearth of concrete evidence makes it difficult to confirm it. Then who is behind the deadly attack?Police claimed to have killed one of the attackers minutes after the incident at a stone’s throw distance from the incident site. But how police killed the striker who managed to come to the market with arms and...
Assam is on the threshold of a massive agitation for exercising the rights over its own resources if somebody goes by the howls of startewide protest against the move to auction marginal oil fields. Many political parties and organizations are up in arms against the Narendra Modi Government at the Centre alleging a set of policies which is believed to have hurt the sentiment of the people who are proud of the state’s oil and tea. These agitating parties and organizations have not spared three month old BJP-led coalition government as they pledged massive agitation to stop the move. The massive agitation started erupting as soon as the Centre cleared the decks for auctioning a dozen of oil...
Only two words ‘secret killings’ struck no less storm across Assam 15 years back where the relatives and friends of a section of ULFA leaders went missing. The bodies were recovered later without any clue to follow the perpetrators. But strangely, protests refused to surface not to speak of police investigation.  Even nobody from the government was with the bereaved family members. One after another such incidents kept Assam’s socio political scene on the boil during the erstwhile Mahanta regime. Congress, in 2001, was quick to make it a poll issue blaming it all on the AGP-led four party alliance government for it. The anger and resentment among the people helped Congress regain...

Never did Rahul Gandhi think that his statement targetting BJP and RSS would run into a hail of anger across Assam after the Barpeta monastery controversy. But it has happened. That too four months before the assembly polls where his party pins hopes on four consecutive term with Tarun Gogoi as Chief Minister. The simmering anger started bursting in the Vaishavite town as soon as the Congress vice president named RSS alleging to have faced hurdle to visit the monastery before an end to his two days visit to Assam. With this statement, Gandhi was trying to justify Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's accusation against RSS and BJP.   Basistha Deba Sarma, the head of the 16 century monastery...
North-East Forum for International Solidarity (NEFIS), in discussion with Irom Sharmila, organized a twelve-hour hunger strike to mark the 15th year of her heroic struggle against Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) on Monday. It is to be noted that on November 2, 2000 a terrible tragedy shook the state of Manipur when 10 civilians were shot dead by paramilitary forces at a local bus-stop in Malom, Manipur. Among the deceased was an 18-year old National Bravery Award winner. The massacre triggered angry protests across Manipur and led to Irom Sharmila going on her epic fast a few days later. Justice, however, continues to be denied in the case of the Malom massacre and many other such...

Amid tight security ring, the players have been lodging at the Radisson Blue Hotel where their fans are thronging to get a glimpse of their favourite footballers.  Many football fans are quite disappointed with the exorbitant ticket prices which is far beyond the reach of the common people. “The price this time is double of what it stood in the last...
