A powerful improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered by the Army on Saturday from Damra area bordering Assam-Meghalaya in Goalpara district. The IED, weighing around five kg. was recovered under a culvert on Damra-Mendipathar road at Habangiri village under Damra police outpost. The device was recovered after the Ninth Sikh Li Regiment of Indian Army camping at Damra, received an information about it.


The explosive has been removed from the spot and taken to the nearby paddy field of the same village for diffusing. No one was arrested in this regard so far.

Along with the rest of the state the 30th Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated at Dhupdhara in Goalpara district with the usual fervour on today to mark the birthday of Assam’s first Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua. Rabha-Hasong bandh cripples life in Goalpara and Kamrup

The 36 hour Rabha Hasong area bandh, which ends today paralysed the normal life in Rabha Hasong areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts. The bandh was called by Rabha National Liberation Front or Rabha Jatiya Mukti Bahini (RJMB), a newly formed insurgent group earlier this year. Along with the rest of the state the 29th Abhiruchi Sports Day was celebrated at Dhupdhara in Goalpara district with the usual fervor on Monday to mark the birthday of Assam’s first Arjuna Award winner Bhogeswar Barua. On the occasion a procession took out throughout Dhupdhara town by the students of Dhupdhara Girls' High School. Several sportsmen, sports organizers and journalists participated in the procession. Normal life was paralyzed in Rabha Hasong areas of Goalpara and Kamrup districts following a 36 hours Rabha Hasong area bandh call which began at 6 in the morning today. The bandh was called by the All Rabha Students Union, All Rabha Women Council and Sixth Schedule Demand Committee in protest against the Government's failure to hold the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council elections and inclusion of the Council into the sixth schedule of Indian Constitution even after several assurances by the state government. 12-hour Goalpara bandh today

Eight organizations, including the Goalpara district units of AASU, ARSU, ABSU, ABYF and Sikshak Samanay Samiti, have called a 12-hour Goalpara district bandh on Wednesday from 6 am in protest against the killing of the two teachers – Kameswar Rabha and Sarit Rabha – after their alleged abduction by the suspected Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA). Almost 47 days since the two were abducted, their bodies were recovered from Kasumari Pahar near Krishnai on June 30. The organizations have demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of each of the deceased.
