The Centre for North East Studies ad Policy Research (C-NES) announces the premiere of ‘Where there are no roads’, at  Jyoti Chitrabon Studio, Kalilipara, Guwahati, on May 24, 2013 at 6.00 pm. 

Maulee Senapati is the Director and Cinematographer while Sanjoy Hazarika, Managing Trustee of C-NES and founder director of the Centre for NE Studies and Policy Research in Jamia Millia Islamia, is the producer and script-writer.

The film is about a unique experiment, a major innovative health campaign that reaches some of the most marginalized and poorest communities who live on hundreds of inaccessible islands, called saporis, on the river Brahmaputra. There are no roads here. But, over a dozen specially-designed boats, conceived and developed by C-NES and manned by doctors, nurses, lab technicians and pharmacists as well as crew, organizers and community workers reach more than ten lakh people, pulling them out of a deadly cycle of maternal and infant mortality, disease and poverty conditions which contrast dramatically with the overwhelming beauty of the place. C-NES is supported by the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), to implement a project providing preventive and promotiove health services in the islands through specially designed boats.

SGBG condoles on former MP’s death

The city based voluntary organization Save Guwahati Bulid Guwahati (SGBG) condoled on the death of former congress MP Santosh Mohan Deb. In a press release the SGBG said that the demise of the veteran politician is an irreparable lost to the organization. “ He (Deb) helped us a great extent when we went to Delhi to meet then Prime Minster Dr. Manmohan Singh to submit a memorandum urging problem of indigenous people’s land problem”, said Dhiren Baruah, former president of the organization. KKHSOU VC denies corruption allegation

Professor Srinath Barooah, founder vice-chancellor of Krisnakanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU), has denied allegations of financial and other irregularities, leveled against him by his former colleagues. Saga of Untied Fund Scam

In the wake of growing demands, especially from a group of conscious citizens, the chief minister’s Vigilance and Anti-corruption Cell arrested five persons including two then Additional Deputy Commissioners for their alleged involvement with a multi crore rupees scam taken place in Jorhat during 2013-15. Farmer commits suicide

In a horrifying development, a poor flood-affected and differently able farmer of Bordowatop locality in Marigaon district committed suicide on Sunday. The farmer, identified as Kamal Nath, reportedly hanged himself in a temporary camp set-up for flood-affected people of the locality. Family members of the deceased, who have also taken shelter in the camp, informed the police that the farmer killed himself under utter frustration arisen out of the destruction of his home and livelihood in the recent flood. Brahma committee urged to protect land rights of indigenous people

Veteran social activist as well as Chairman of the Guwahati Municipal Development Authority(GMDA) has submitted a memorandum to the Hari Shankar Brahma committee recently demanding  protection of the indigenous people’s land rights reside in greater Guwahati area. Flood claims six more lives in Assam

The flood related death climbed up to 50 in Assam as six more people, reportedly, died drowning in flood waters in different parts of the state. The State Disaster Management Department data revealed that flood claimed lives of a one boy and a girl on Thursday in Gossaigaon of Kokorajhar besides a state Water Resource Department official was swept away by overflowing Bhogdoi river in Jorhat.  In Samguri area of Nagaon district a life-less body a man recovered after he was swept away by flood waters. Flood situation deteriorates, death toll rises to 31

The overall flood situation in Assam deteriorates day by day as the mighty Brahmaputra and its tributaries submerge new areas every day. Meanwhile, the death toll increases horrifyingly.
