JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

In yet another significant development within the Congress legislature party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to induct four new ministers in his cabinet.  Gogoi, who is camping in New Delhi is holding a series of meeting with Dr CP Joshi to finalize the new faces.A special panel is examining the names to be sent to Sonia Gandhi for her seal of approval in a day or two. He would leave back for Guwahati only after the formalities. The new ministers are expected to take the oath next week.     Gogoi on Tuesday met the Congress president who cleared the decks for cabinet expansion.

The much waited children immunization gets underway on Monday to keep seven dreaded diseases at bay in the state.Launched under the `Mission Indradhanush, the programme in this phase covers eight districts - Hailakandi, Karimganj, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara. Darramg and Nagaon.Health officials in Dispur told Assam Times that the immunization program is covering unvaccinated children below two years.“It would protect the children from diseases - Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Polio, Tuberculosis, Measles and Hepatitis B,” said a senior official.According to information, immunization is taking place in 2,060 places in the eight districts with 300 mobile teams.
