JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Brisk polling in BTAD elections

Amid tight security brisk polling is underway in four BTAD district for the 40-member Bodoland Autonomous Council on Wednesday.An estimated 20,64,099 electorates are expected to exercise their franchise in 2,778 polling booths in Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa and Udalguri districts from 7 in the morning.They would decide the fate of BPF, BPPF, AGP, Congress, AIUDF, PCDR and Left parties.Poll authorities told Assam Times that 80 companies of security forces have been guarding the entire BTAD areas to ensure free and fair polls. Cabinet to get 4 new faces

In yet another significant development within the Congress legislature party, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi is all set to induct four new ministers in his cabinet.  Gogoi, who is camping in New Delhi is holding a series of meeting with Dr CP Joshi to finalize the new faces.A special panel is examining the names to be sent to Sonia Gandhi for her seal of approval in a day or two. He would leave back for Guwahati only after the formalities. The new ministers are expected to take the oath next week.     Gogoi on Tuesday met the Congress president who cleared the decks for cabinet expansion.

Arrested Jacky in Guwahati!

In a major embarressent for Borkhola MLA Rumi Nath, police continues to grill her estrange husband Jacky Zakir along with her PSO a day after the duo were held for their  alleged link with a notorious car lifer.Zakie was held from Karimganj while her PSO Debabrata Barpatra Gohainwas arrested from the Special Branch headquarters in Guwahati on Tuesday.Sources told Assam Times that police have sufficient edivence to substantiate Jacky Zakir’s link with car lifer Anil Chauhan.Zakir is being brought to Guwahati for thorough interrogation on Wednesday.

Mission Indradhanush begins

The much waited children immunization gets underway on Monday to keep seven dreaded diseases at bay in the state.Launched under the `Mission Indradhanush, the programme in this phase covers eight districts - Hailakandi, Karimganj, Dhubri, Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar, Goalpara. Darramg and Nagaon.Health officials in Dispur told Assam Times that the immunization program is covering unvaccinated children below two years.“It would protect the children from diseases - Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Polio, Tuberculosis, Measles and Hepatitis B,” said a senior official.According to information, immunization is taking place in 2,060 places in the eight districts with 300 mobile teams.

Gogoi bats for new legislations

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi on Sunday underscored the need to bring in innovative legislations, both operational as well as structural in the judiciary to cater to the needs of the society in tune with changing surroundings.In his address at the Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts on Sunday in Delhi, Gogoi outlined a slew of initiatives taken by the state government to strengthen judicial infrastructure and manpower that included sanctioning of 36 new courts, converting 20 ad-hoc fast track courts to regular courts, sanctioning of 54 new fast-track courts for trial of offences against women and doubling the number of courts at subordinate levels.He said the new...

Concern over court pendency

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi expressed grave concern over the alarming rate of pendency of cases which he blamed it on the delay in the delivery of justice.In his address at the Conference of Chief Ministers and Chief Justices of High Courts on Sunday in Delhi, he said, the synergy must be directed towards innovation of new ways that will enable clearing of backlog of pending cases and ensure speedy justice to our citizens.He called for proper training of judicial officers to maintain the quality of the system. The chief minister further stressed time-bound implementation of e-Court project to 'bring about sea-changes in the justice delivery system.

Gogoi demands central package
