JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Kalita downplays poll prediction

APCC president Bhubneswar Kalita downplayed the NDTV opinion poll saying that these are not true.Talking to reporters in the sidelines of a function in Guwahati on Saturday, Kalita  said that each of the elections are some challenges and that it is not easy to win an election.It assumes significance two days after NDTV opinion predicts absolute majority for NDA and the poll suggest clean sweep for Congress.     

Explosives seized; 3 held

Railway police foiled a nefarious blueprint of a car bomb explosion when they seized a huge consignment of explosives in Paltanbazar on Saturday.Acting on a tip off, railway police in Paltanbazar picked up three persons from a train and seized these explosives from their possession.During interrogation, they are believed to have confessed that these explosives were meant for NDFB-S to be exploded a powerful car bomb. Interrogation is in progress.    

Tension in Matipung

Tension is simmering near Diphu after a group of people clashed with police at Matipung forest on Saturday.The incident took place when over 100 landless people were trying to occupy a plot of land earlier Congress leader and Diphu candidate Biren Singh Ingty received from the government.Police resorted to blank firing to disperse the local residents immediately after they locked in a clash with the illegal settlers.Then senior police and civil officials arrived in the spot and the situation was brought under control.

Opinion polls wrong: Rahul

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi has asked his party men not to repose any faith on the opinion polls.In his response to a question posed by Apurba Bhattacharya in the video conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Guwahati on Saturday, Gandhi said that these predictions are not true.Gandhi’s response to the APCC leader assumes significance two days after NDTV opinion predicts absolute majority for NDA and the poll suggest clean sweep for Congress.     

BJP candidate unlikely in Koliabor

BJP is likely to avoid Koliabor constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.State party leadership think it necessary to check further division of non Congress votes in the crucial seat where chief minister Tarun Gogoi’s son is in the fray.  Central leadership prepared a panel of three contenders. But the state leadership on Friday suggested the high command not to field any candidate where AGP candidate Dr Arun Sarma is set to extract the mileage.

Akhil jailed in fresh case

Dispur police arrested Akhil Gogoi in a fresh case on Saturday before the court of chief judicial magistrate in Kamrup had sent the KMSS president to the jail.Gogoi was produced before the CJM court in the morning where he was remanded to judicial custody for yet another period of 14 days.Gogoi has been languishing in jail from March 5 after five days in police custody in connection with the self immolation of a KMSS activist.   The Gauhati High Court on March 19 will hear his bail petition in three other cases.  

Bandh disrupts normalcy

Normal life continues to remain disrupted in some parts of the state for the third consecutive day on Saturday following the AKRSU-sponsored Assam Bandh raising separate Kamatapur demand.The bandh is response in the Koch Rajbanshi dominated areas in Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Morigaon and Darrang districts.A string of uneasy incidents took place during the last 24 hours where bandh supporters damaged several vehicles.A section of supporters have been enforcing the bandh by burning tyres on the roads.    Roads in these pockets remained deserted, schools and colleges, shops and markets remained closed under the impact of the bandh that came into force from early in the morning on...

Cong to announce Mongoldoi candidate

Congress is believed to have finalized the candidate for the Mongoldoi seat.The crucial seat has three top contenders and that’s why, the party’s poll panel found it difficult to finalise it.The announcement is expected on Saturday.  Former MP Kirip Chaliha, Pranjeet Chaudhury, Pradyut Bhuytan are the three top contenders for the seat.

Naga miscreants held

Karbi Anglong police have arrested 5 miscreants from Nagaland when after they allegedly set on fire 7 houses on Friday night.According to information, a group of miscreants from the neighbouring state arrived in a tiny village atop Rongapahar near Doldoli at night.Apart from blank firing to unleash terror among the villagers, they set afire 7 houses forcing the police to step in.Apart from tightening patrolling in the area, police arrested 5 miscreants and charged them with terrorizing and attacking the local residents.      

Poachers targets strayed away rhino

Poachers are believed to have been targeting a rhino in Jorhat district after it strayed out of Kaziranga on Friday.The animal struck attention of the local villagers at an open paddy field at Jhanjimuk in Teok area on Friday afternoon.But a section of the local residents told Assam Times that they came to see three poachers following the animal. Some of them further came to hear sounds of gunshots in the evening.  Forest guards and Teok police have been trying to locate the one horn animal.
