JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Senior AGP leader Brindabon on Thursday refuses to contest from Tezpur alleging utter disappointment of Joseph Toppo who is a strong contender in the race for ticket.Goswami has asked the party leadership to field Toppo from Tezpur and to bring Padma Hazarika back to the party.Notably, the party is considering the name of Brindabon Goswami in lieu of the sitting MP.
A brainstorming AGP session on Thursday is believed to have finalized the second land last list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in the state.   Several senior party leaders attended the meeting chaired by president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.The party is expected to announce the final list of the candidates on Friday.
Barring Silchar, Tezpur and Koliabor, AIUDF has announced the first list of candidates on Thursday.Party president Badaruddin Ajmal will contest from Dhubri while Gopinath Das will contest from Guwahati.In Korimganj, the party has fielded Radheshyam Biswas while it has allowed Aditya Langthasa to contest from Nagaon.AIUDF candidate from Barpeta this time will be Chirajuddin Ajmal while Mamud Imdadul will contest from Lakhimpur.
Normal life comes to a grinding halt in some parts of the state on Thursday following the AAKRSU-sponsored Assam Bandh demanding separate Kamatapur.The bandh meets total response in the Koch Rajbanshi dominated areas in Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Morigaon and Darrang districts.Roads remained deserted, schools and colleges, shops and markets remained closed under the impact of the bandh that came into force from early in the morning.

A bus conductor was killed when a gang of dacoits unleashed a reign of terror at five super buses in Dhubri district on Thursday.The incident took place at Bogoribari in Dhubri in the wee hours where a gang of dacoits halted five West Bengal bound passenger buses at gun point. Then they started looting the passengers.Then they vanished from the spot after blankfiring to unleash terror among the passengers.Grievously injured passenger Khakon Dey was shifted to the hospital where he succumbed to injuries.      
BJP election committee is holding its crucial meeting in New Delhi to finalise the list of candidate for the remaining seats for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The opposition party is expected to announce the list after the meeting. These seats include nine seats from Assam.Earlier the party announced candidates for Guwahati, Mongoldoi, Lakhimpur, Jorhat and Nagaon.
