JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

BJP is all set to announce its candidate for Koliabor seat in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Talking to reporters in Lakhimpur on Friday, BJP state unit president Sarbananda Sonowal said that the party is in a process to finalise the candidate to take on Gaurav Gogoi in a day or two.But he said that the candidate would be strong enough to overpower Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi, who happens to be the chief minister’s son.

The Gauhati High Court on Friday fixed March 19 as the date of hearing of an anticipatory bail plea moved by Kamal Medhi in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.The court, however, granted interim bail to Dhorya Konwar and Amal Bezbaruah who have been booked by Dispur police. But their bail would be applicable till March 19.   
Gauhati High Court will hear Akhil Gogoi’s bail petition on March 19.The petition moved in the court on Friday. But it fixed March 19 as the date of hearing of Gogoi’s plea who has been in judicial custody after five days of police custody in connection with the recent self immolation of a KMSS activist in Dispur.The court fixed the date of hearing last week. But the counselor applied for more time to appear on behalf of the KMSS president who was arrested in connection with the self immolation of Pranab Boro.
AGP is in a mood to withdraw suspension against Padma Hazarika. But the request should come from the Sootea MLA.Several senior party leaders openly discussed the withdrawal of suspension order against Hazarika. He was Birendra Prasad Baishya, who on Friday openly stressed withdrawal of the action.On Thursday, former party president Brindabon Goswami urged the leadership to withdraw the against the MLA.In his response, president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said that the request should come from Hazarika for the same.Hazarika was suspended in February 7 alleging that he refused to toe on the party line in the Rajya Sabha polls.
President Pranab Mukherjee and the Election Commission on Friday issued notification for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7.The president issued the notification calling upon the people to elect their representative in the Lok Sabha.The Commission issued the notification informing the people about the schedule for the elections.This phase include 5 constituencies in Assam namely, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Koliabor, Tezpur, Lakhimpur.Candidates for this phase of polls are now free to file nomination papers from Friday. The last date for filing of nomination is March 21.These would be scrutinized on March 22 and they would be able to withdraw the nomination papers on March 24....
AGP formally released its poll manifestos on Friday promising expulsion of immigrants, land pattas for genuine citizens.Releasing the party manifesto, president Prafulla Kumar Mahanta promised that the party will never allow the Centre to implement the Indo-Bangladesh land deal signed two years back.Most of the party candidates attended the meeting at the party office on Friday. Senior party leaders told Assam Times that the name of Dhubri candidate would be announced in a day or two.      
Its official. Joseph Toppo will contest from Tezpur in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The decision was finalized on Friday a day after the sitting MP sent his resignation to the party leadership.Senior party leaders formally announced his name after Toppo arrived in the party headquarters to attend the general council meeting on Friday. The party on Thursday rejected his resignation.   
BJP president Sarbananda Sonowal has kickstarted his polls campaign in Lakhimpur with an appeal to vote for the party to get rid of Congress misgovernance.The state party unit president landed in Lakhimpur for the first time on Friday after getting ticket to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Thousands of party workers greeted him as he arrived in the constituency to be taken with a huge procession in the morning.Talking to reporters, Sonowal said that BJP is confident of victory and that the people of Assam would ensure the win in the upcoming polls.Lakhimpur along with Koliabor, Jorhat, Dibrugarh will go to the polls on April 7. 
Normal life continues to remain paralyzed in some parts of the state on Friday following the AKRSU-sponsored Assam Bandh demanding separate Kamatapur.The bandh meets total response in the Koch Rajbanshi dominated areas in Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Morigaon and Darrang districts.Roads remained deserted, schools and colleges, shops and markets remained closed under the impact of the bandh that came into force from early in the morning on Thursday.
