JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Gogoi ups ante on Modi

We have nothing to hide. We will publish white paper on the assistance to the state by both UPA and NDA  governments. CM denies dissidence

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi straightly denied any dissidence within the party legislators.Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan on Wednesday, Gogoi said that all legislators would help the party ensure a commendable performance in the election.He said that difference among the party legislators are not new in a huge ruling party. But only to be kept in abeyance. He said that he has given the legislators chances to air their grievances.He said that Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a meeting of a section of his colleagues at his residence on Tuesday evening only after taking his ascent.

AGP finalizing candidates

AGP is holding its steering committee meeting in Guwahati on Wednesday to finalise the candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.Party leaders told Assam Times that presided over by President Prafullla Kumar Mahanta at the Ambari-based party headquarters, the crucial meeting have already finalized the names of 10 candidates.“Other candidates would be finalized towards the evening,” said a senior party leader. But the party unanimously has decided to go it alone in the Lok sabha polls.              

EC reviews poll preparedness

Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath is on a day long visit to Guwahati to take stock of the preparation for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 7, 12 and 24.Sampath is reviewing the entire poll preparations with the deputy commissioners along with the superintendents of police at the Khanapara Administrative Staff College from 10-30 in the morning.This stock-taking meeting would be followed by his meeting with Chief Secretary JS Kholsa, DGP Khagen Sarma along with state’s election commissioner.Apart from this, the full fledged commission is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting with the political parties to discuss the model code of conduct which is in force.  

Nagaon CRPF jawan killed in C’garh

A CRPF janwan hailing from Assam was killed in Tuesday’s Maoist attack in Chattisgarh.Identified as Faizul Haque, the jawans hailed from Kampur in Nagaon.Amid a descending pall of gloom, the body of Faizul would be brought to his home on Wednesday for last rites after homage.         

Hardcore ULFA militant held

Police arrested a hardcore ULFA militant in Sivasagar on Tuesday.Identified as Ghanashyam Asom, the militant was captured from Piyoli Phukan Nagar in the town on Tuesday evening.The youth who hails from Lakhimpur was involved in a string of sabotage activities the district.

Another setback for AGP

AGP received yet another setback hardly a month before the Lok Sabha polls.Two more senior party leaders have left the regional party in the last a day after two others joined BJP.Senior party leader and veteran lawyer Bijon  Mahajan and Queen Ojha resigned from the party’s membership.The duo are believed to have been waiting to join BJP. According to information, they are all set to join BJP on Wednesday.

Dissident MLAs meet in Dispur

At least 25 Congress legislators have drawn up a slew of strategies to put chief minister Tarun Gogoi in a fix.The meeting began at 7 in the evening at the residence of Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday where they are believed to have discussed strategies to mount pressure on the party high command to reconsider the candidates.They have decided to lobby for a senior party leader and former MP whom they want to contest from Mongoldoi Lok Sabha seat.Several legislators have formally opposed Ranee Narah as candidate from Lakhimpur saying that she wont be able to win the polls.Apart from senior leaders Sarat Borkotoky and Abdul Muhib Mazumdar, several other MLAs loyal to Dr Sarma attended the...

Opp consensus against Gaurav!

In a significant development, the Opposition parties are considering a consensus candidate in Koliabor to stymie the poll prospect of Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.AGP President Prafulla Kumar Mahanta is holding talks with BJP, AIUDF along with the like-minded parties on Tuesday.The development comes at a time when AGP is considering the name of Dr Arun Sarma and AIUDF is set to announce the name of Badaruddin Ajmal.
