JK Borgohain passes away

Veteran journalist, prolific writer and socio economic and political analyst Jatindra Kumar Borgohain passed away on Wednesday following a brief illness.

Borgohain died two died at the Hayat Hospital at around 2-50 in the afternoon two days after he was rushed to it following a serious ailment. Despite best “possible” treatment, he failed to recuperate. He was 72.

Borgohain, who hailed from Jakhalabandha area in Nagaon district started his career of service as an assistant professor of economics in JB College. In 1992, he came to Guwahati and joined as editor wioth a vernacular daily. Since then, he served several media houses. He further joined as  editor in chief with a city based news channel.  A pall of gloom descended as soon as the news of his demise spread like wild fire.

Chief minister Tarun Gogoi along with many other political and non political leadersand organizations expressed deep shock at his demise.

Normal life continues to remain paralyzed in some parts of the state on Friday following the AKRSU-sponsored Assam Bandh demanding separate Kamatapur.The bandh meets total response in the Koch Rajbanshi dominated areas in Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Morigaon and Darrang districts.Roads remained deserted, schools and colleges, shops and markets remained closed under the impact of the bandh that came into force from early in the morning on Thursday.
Police have arrested a senior Congress leader from Arunachal Pradesh after the income tax officials seized a huge amount of money from his possession in Guwahati on Friday.Identified as Lombu Tayong, the former Arunachal Pradesh minister was captured from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in the morning. A huge amount of money to the tune of Rs 15 lakhs is believed to have been seized from his possession kept in two bags. Details are awaited.
The Opposition AGP is likely to field Joseph Toppo in Tezpur in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls slated for April 24.The move to field Toppo from Tezpur got momentum day after the sitting MP faxed his resignation papers to the party leadership on Thursday alleging utter humiliation from the party.Sources closed to Toppo claimed on Friday that he might join BJP. Security forces claimed to have killed a hardcore NDFB-S militant in Sonitpur district on Friday.According to information, the militant was killed at an encounter in Ramnathpur area in the wee hours.Two other dreaded militants of the Bodo outfit have been captured in the encounter.

Gauhati High court is expected to hear the anticipatory bail application of Kamal Medhi who has been implicated in the sensational Pranab Boro self immolation case.Medhi, who is on the run to get rid of arrest, had to move the High Court after the Chief Judicial Magistrate rejected the plea for anticipatory bail since police failed to arrest him in the case.    
Gauhati High Court is all set to hear the bail application of Akhil Gogoi who was remanded to judicial custody last week.The court fixed the date of hearing last week. But the counselor applied for more time to appear on behalf of the KMSS president who was arrested in connection with the self immolation of Pranab Boro.
BJP has announced the second list of candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.The main opposition party has fielded Rameswar Teli in Dibrugarh while Chandra Mohan Patowary has been fielded in Barpeta.Ram Prasad Sarma will contest from Tezpur while his counterpart in Dhubri is Dr Debmoy Sanyal.Krishna Das will contest from Kaimganj while Kabindra Purkayastha has been fielded in Silchar.The party has earlier announced candidates for Guwahati, Mangoldoi, Jorhat, Lakhimpur.  
Barring Mongoldoi, Congress has announced all candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.AICC spokesman Modhusudan Mishtry announced two more names at a press conference in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon.The ruling party has fielded Jonjunali Baruah in Nagaon while Wazed Ali Chaudhury will contest from Dhubri.The AICC election committee is yet to clear the candidate for Mongoldoi seat.The party earlier has announced the names of ten candidates.
