Assam remembers INA's Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury

All India Patriotic Forum, Assam branch on Saturday remembered Umesh Chandra Devchoudhury, who joined the Indian National Army (Azad Hind Fauj) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1943 and fought many battles for the motherland. Probably the last INA soldier from Assam, Devchoudhury passed away on December 11, 2013 at his residence in Patacharkuchi of lower Assam. A Lieutenant of INA, Devchoudhury maintained an active life till his demise at the age of 97.

In a formal memorial meeting held in Guwahati Press Club various speakers highlighted the spirit of patriotism shown by Devchoudhury and his colleagues who led an eventful struggle in various south and southeast Asian places like Singapore, Rangoon, Arakan front etc. With his sincerity and commitment, Devchoudhury elevated himself up to the level of Lieutenant in INA and led his troop against the British imperial forces mostly on the India-Myanmar border in 1944 to make India an independent nation.

Speakers including freedom fighters Jatin Goswami & Ganesh Chandra Das, Prof Rabin Devchoudhury, Ajay Dutta, Jaharlal Saha, Umakanta Bhattacharya, Jagadindra Raichoudhury, Rupma Barua, Hiten Mahanta, Nava Thakuria, KN Devchoudhury, Pramod Kalita etc paid their heartiest tributes to the departed soul.

Before the meeting, floral tributes were also paid to Devchoudhury and two patriotic songs ‘Bande Mataram----’and ‘O Mor Aponar Desh ----’were also sung by the participants in the memorial meeting.

A special assembly session in Nagaland on  Friday confirmed TR zeliang’s strength two days after the former NPF leader took oath as chief minister again. Altogether 46 legislators from NPF, BJP along with a few independents voted for TR Zeliang on the floor while 11 legislators opposed thr motion at the end of a high voltage political drama in the north eastern state. Bihar governor Ram Nath Kavind is preparing to succeed Pranab Mukherjee a day after the NDA presidential candidate won the polls defeating the united opposition candidate Meira Kumar on Thursday. Kevind, who is putting in his papers as the Governor of Bihar is expected to take oath as the country’s 14th President. Assan chief minister Sarbanabda Sonowal and his counterparts in the north eastern states have congratulated Kavind who would be sworn in shortly.  Kevind got 65.65% votes in the presidential elections where 99% legislators participated in the polls held on Monday.

The new elected President of India would be formally announced on Thursday as the counting of votes is going on. According to the returning officer, the ballots of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are counting and then ballots from the states would be taken for counting. According to the Election Commission, the results would be available at 5 in the evening before a formal announcement.
