Gamlin joins as Delhi chief secy

Despite stiff resistance from Arvind Kejriwal and his lobby senior IAS officer from Assam Shakuntala Gamlin took over as Delhi chief secretery. 

Shakuntala, the daughter of former minister Lalit Doley and wife of former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Jarbom Gamlin has alleged intimidation by a section of bureacrates not to take over. 

He was Lt Governor Jung who appointed her in the top post defying the chief minister's opposition who calls her corrupt.

There seems to be no let-up in the overall flood scene in Assam on Wednesday with incessant rains in many parts of the state along with the catchment areas in Arunachal Pradesh. Rajen Gohain has been given railway ministry hours after the Nagaon MP took oath as minister of state on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi allocated the portfolio to the senior BJP leader fetching a ray of hope for the north eastern region. Many parties and organizations in the North East have welcomed Gohain saying that he would try his best to enhance railway connectivity in the entire region. Gohain is the second MP from Nagaon district of Assam to have taken oath as Union minister. Muhiram Saikia was first to have taken oath as Union minister of state for human resource development in the HD Deve Gowda and IK Gujral governments.

The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad continues its protest for the second consecutive day on Tuesday against the move to auction 12 oilfields in Assam. AJYCP activists in different parts of the state blocked the National Highways from 11 in the morning disrupting surface transport communication for at least three hours. The overall flood scene in Assam refuses to improve on Tuesday with incessant rains that lashed the state for the last couple of days. Part of the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon has come under the surging waters forcing many birds and animals to shift their places. More than 1.5 lakh people have been reeling under the current flood wave in Morigaon, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts where relief and rescue operations are in progress. The situation threatens to take more grim turn if the rains refuse to relent.
Rajen Gohain took oath as Union minister when Prime Minister Narendra Modi expanded his council of ministers inducting the Nagaon MP along with 18 others on Tuesday. President Pranab Mukherjee administered the senior BJP leader from Assam the oath of office and secrecy at a function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in the morning in presence of Modi along with his ministerial colleagues. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal along with a few top state BJP leaders were present in the function. Gohain, the three fourth time MP from Nagaon got the invitation to take oath two days ago when he was in his home district.

The recent reign of terror in Dhaka has forced the north eastern states to remain on alert along the Indo-Bangladesh border. A round the clock vigil is in place along the border to check the intrusion of miscreants in the face of a crackdown on the soil of Bangladesh. A stepped up vigil has been intensified along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya. Hundreds of AJYCP activists in Sivasagar district launched day long strike in protest against the move to auction 12 oil fields. The agitating activists thronged the oil fields where they warned the Narendra Modi government at the Centre not to proceed with the deal. On Tuesday, they would block the National Highway No 37 to oppose the move. On Wednesday, AJYCP will stage rail blockade asking the Centre to roll back the decision by July 8. Notably, the Centre is preparing to auction dozens of oil fields to the private parties which include 12 from Assam.
