NEWS DELHI:The Asom Gana Parishad on Friday gave hint of an extreme step if the Centre proceed with the deal to grant citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshi immigrants.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi after meeting Union home minister Rajnath Singh, the 8 member delegation of the regional party and coalition partner said they are still dead opposed to the NDA government's initiatives.
"We have apprised Singh of our concern. We have talked to other regional parties like TDP, Akali Dal, BJD and received huge support in our favor. We won't compromise,"said Dr Kamala Kalita who was one of the members.
Former Union minister BP Baishya said,"if need be we need to pull out of the coalition government. Two cabinet berths is not a big issue. The issue is Assam and it's people."
The regional party held a citizens' convention in Guwahati on Thursday morning where the party resolved to firmly oppose the Citizenship(Amendment) Bill, 2016 inside and outside Parliament.
The significant development assumes significance when a BJP delegation also called on Singh on Friday in support of the Bill saying that the Bill should be passed at an earlier date to help the Hindu immigrants stay safe before the publication of the NRC draft.
