Golaghat: Last Wednesday, an insightful sensitization workshop addressing the detrimental effects of tobacco use was organized at the conference hall of the District & Sessions Judge’s office in Golaghat. The event witnessed the presence of key figures in the fight against tobacco consumption, including Secretary of DLSA Golaghat, Smt. JyotiSmita Sarma, Dr. Sunita Ekka from District Tobacco Control Cell, Golaghat, and Rudhir Prakash Sarma, Divisional Coordinator of Upper Assam Division from The UNION. Officials from the DLSA office and the health department also actively participated.
The workshop commenced with a warm welcome address, followed by an insightful discussion on the provisions of the COTPA Act 2003 by the Secretary of DLSA. Dr. Ekka provided an in-depth analysis of the tobacco burden in Assam and the diverse health implications arising from tobacco use. She took the opportunity to shed light on the achievements of the District Tobacco Control Cell in Golaghat, expressing gratitude to colleagues and stakeholders for their unwavering support.
Rudhir Sarma from The UNION emphasized the importance of a united front to combat the tobacco menace and encouraged collective efforts towards achieving a tobacco-free generation. He urged the attendees to utilize and share information about the toll-free National Tobacco Quitline Services (1800-112-356), established by the Indian government to offer counseling services for individuals keen on quitting tobacco.
The workshop culminated with the Secretary of DLSA, Golaghat, urging all present to refrain from tobacco use, prioritize their health, and disseminate the knowledge acquired during the workshop to their colleagues, friends, and family members. The event showcased a collective determination to work towards a healthier, tobacco-free community.

A former MLA lands in trouble for alleged misappropriation for fund meant for the development of his local area. He is none other than Pranab Kalita against whom the Kamrup (Rrural) district administration has filed a case alleging sheer misappropriation for the fund.Initially, acting on the allegations of gross misappropriation of the funds during his stint as MLA in Palasbari assembly constituency, Deputy Commissioner asked the circle officer to institute an enquiry. In a major boost wildlife conservation efforts, Goutam Narayan is the first Indian to have received the Harry Messel Award for his role to preserve the north eastern pygmy hog. His name figured in the recent IUCN Species Survival Commission Leaders' summit in Abu Dhabi. According to the citation, Narayan has been awarded in recognition of his pivotal role in the Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme in the region since 1995 which would help the country save a whole genus from extinction.

Nine Haj pilgrims from Assam sustained serious injury at the Mecca stamped on Thursday. Identified as Jahanur Begum, she as been battling for life at the Al Jadid Hospital. This was stated by the ministry of external affairs in New Delhi.Four other pilgrim hailing from Karimganj district are believed to have been battling for life at the hospital. Four persons from Assam sustained injury in the Saudi Arabian tragedy where nearly one thousand Haj pilgrims died in a stamped on Thursday. All the four persons are learnt to have hailed from Karimganj district who departed Assam in the first week of August. His family members have been in touch with the Saudi Arabian authorities.
