Brahmaputra River Dolphin Day on October 24

Aaranyak is organizing a series of awareness programme as part of its ‘Brahmaputra River Dolphin Day, 2011’ on the occasion of the International Fresh Water Dolphin Day, i.e. 24th October. The programme is focused on spreading information and knowledge among the general public including students about Gangetic Dolphin (called “Xihu” in Assam), the National and State Aquatic Animal.


The programme is being organized in association with Zoological Society of London (ZSL), UK, for the first time in Assam. The programme will begin at 9.30 A.M on October 23rd at Sudmersion Hall, Cotton College with an interaction of children/ students. Interaction with experts on conservation of River Dolphin, Dr. Raj Amin of Zoological Society of London and Dr. Abdul Wakid, Head of Gangetic Dolphin Research and Conservation Initiative, Aaranyak.


The interaction will be followed by a quiz on “Dolphin and freshwater ecosystem.” Students from Class VIII to XII standard from different schools and colleges will participate in the programme. The focal theme will be ‘Gangetic Dolphin and Fresh Water Ecosystem’ and there will be sub themes:


• Evolution & origin of River Dolphin


• Ecology of Gangetic dolphin


• Myths and beliefs related to them


• Creative arts related to dolphins: Literature, movies, music, drama etc.


• Present status and conservation issues.


It is worth to mention that any interested persons can join into the Quiz cum Interaction on the very day. The next phase of the programme will be held on October 24, the International River Dolphin Day, at Kukurmara on the bank of River Kulsi, the hub of Gangetic Dolphin in Kamrup district. The programme for the day is called “A Day with Dolphin at Kulsi River”.


It will basically revolve around young students/children of Kukurmara area, who will be facilitated with an interaction with experts and experienced conservationists on various aspects of conservation and ecosystem of River Dolphin.


The students will be participating in a group discussion on threats posed to Gangetic River Dolphin. They will also stage drama focused on various conservation issues to the State aquatic animal. A drama troupe of Salil Kanika will stage a performance at the public hall at Kukurmara in the afternoon of October 24th with the focus on conservation of River Dolphin and its ecosystem.


The series of programme will finally come to an end with stage show on River Dolphin conservation and threats posed to it at District Library auditorium in Guwahati from 4-30 to 7-30 P.M. on October 30th. The show will include a drama performance by Salil’s group.


Salil Kanika is one of the few renowned personalities in the field of Conservation Drama in the world. His group will perform drama on various places in the state including Kamrup, Tinsukia, and Dibrugarh from October 24th to 30th.

The Cultural Function of the Ladies Club of North Eastern Regional Institute of Science and Technology (NERIST), Nirjuli, Arunachal Pradesh was organised last evening - April 20 in the Institute Auditorium. Assam tea as national drink on Apr 17, 2013

Come on April 17, 2013. Assam tea is all set to get status of national drink. Addressing a Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Assam Tea Planters Association in Jorhat, Dr Ahluwaliah said that the drink would be accorded national drink status to coincide with the 212th birth anniversary of first Assamese tea planter and Sepoy Mutiny leader Maniram Dewan. He said that he would soon take up the matter with Union Commerce Minister Anand Sharma. The meeting was presided by ATPA Chairman Atma Ram Kesera.

Gogoi reminds PM of growing Maoist menace

The Assam government on Friday urged the Centre to include seven districts in the Integrated Action Plan as soon as possible. In a memorandum to prime minister on Friday, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that seven districts were Maoist infested that that if these are included in the integrated action plan the Maoist menace would have hardly any chance to surface. Gogoi said that there has been a growing Maoists activities in Upper Assam only because of its strategic location. He requested Dr Singh to send more para military forces saying that 97 companies of central paramilitary forces were inadequate for tackling the menace.

PM stresses peace process to be expedited

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh thanked Assam for allowing peace to be restored. Addressing the platinum jubilee celebration of the Assam Assembly on Friday in Dispur, Dr Singh said that only peace would ensure first track development in the state. Stress on border trade for North East development

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Friday stressed trans border trade with Myanmar to ensure a speedy economic development in the north eastern region. Addressing the platinum jubilee celebration of the Assam Assembly on Friday in Dispur, the prime minister said that the government was looking forward to better trade relations with the neighbours such as Myanmar, Bangladesh and Bhutan, countries that share borders with the Northeast. He said that he would discuss with the leadership of Myanmar how the opportunities could be expansion of trade with India. According to him, Assam and other states of Northeast can and should play leading roles in looking eastwards.

Dr Singh lauds Assam’s pace of development

During his 6 hour long visit to Guwahati on Friday, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan congratulated the Assam government for the economic growth it has achieved. Addressing a gathering at Dispur parade ground he said in the last year of the 11th Plan, Assam was sure of a growth rate of 7.18 percent. He said that Bogibeel Bridge over the river Brahmaputra would be expedited and that the Gas cracker project would not be allowed to delayed further.

Ensure peace in anti-dam protest: PM to Gogoi

Amid simmering anti-big dam protest, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has asked the Assam government to ensure that the agitation do not turn into a law and order break problem. Dr Singh’s suggestion came up when he convened the cabinet meeting at the Raj Bhawan on Friday evening just before leaving back to New Delhi. Encounter stop Karbi hills: KPLT top leader, 4 others killed

Altogether five hardcore KPLT militants were killed and two others were arrested during a fierce gunbattle in Karbi Anglong district on Friday. The encounter took place in the wee hours at Borpung village under Chokihali police outpost in the district. A joint team police and para military forces cordoned off the area where the encounter took place. Five died on the spot while two others have been arrested.
