Sadhana Das passes away

Sadhana Das (69 years), wife of a benevolent social worker of Jorhat Jiten Das has left her mortal body on 21st June, 2007 at Dispur Hospital, Guwahati. She has left behind her husband, her only son Mr. Jyotimoi Das and her two daughters along with many other relatives.

Protest over Governor’s statement

We are highly surprised over the statement of Banwarilal Purohit, the honourable Governor of Assam in a public meeting at Maniyari near Barpeta. He has said in that meeting that Srimanta Sankaradeva did not do any thing to remove the malaise of child-marriage. This is an offensive statement to say the least. The Governor should have known that the saint reformed the entire society in Assam and brought the ethnic groups together by a unified cultural bond. Landslide kills 5 in Ri Bhoi

Five people were killed and five others are believed to have been trapped when a huge hillock slipped atop the Umiam hill in Meghalaya on Saturday. The incident took place in the afternoon when three houses where collapsed by the eroded soil and mud in the Ri Bhoi district. The district authority has deployed workers in search of five others who are believed to have been trapped in the huge heap of soil and mud. "An incessant rain makes it difficult for us to continue the search operation "said a worker deployed in the search operation.

Five dead in Guwahati landslides

Rainwaters in Guwahati have been receding where some low lying areas would take a few days more to be cleared of the stagnant waters. But the Guwahati denizens are yet to get out of the blues where a series of incidents of landslides have claimed five lives so far.  The Guwahati authorities have identified 366 landslide prone areas in 14 hills surrounding the capital city and have appealed to come down to avoid the in pending disaster.

Guwahati rainwater toll mounts to 4 with a state secretetate employee Deben Nath was washed away by the river Bahini on Wrdnesday as he was crossing a bamboo bridge. The Assam government has announced Rs.400,000 as ex gratia to each of the four families.

Guwahati flood toll goes up to 3

The death toll in the massive waterlogging in Guwahati has gone up to three when an SDRF team deployed in rescue operation fished out the body of a youth on Wednesday morning who had been remaining untraced since Tuesday afternoon.  Identified as Pintu Das from Dibrugarh, the body was recovered during a search operation at Junali area where he was washed away by the river Bharalu. Let up in Guwahati waterlogging

Rain waters start receding in Guwahati on Wednesday twenty four hours after heavydownpour wreaked huge havoc in the premier north eastern city where two persons were killed. ACS officer fired from Dispur office

The Assam government has fired a newly appointed lady ACS officer alleging her involvement in the APSC scam suggesting similar action against many others who managed to be selected in the combined competitive examination. M Kalita, the assistant commissioner attached to the chief minister's secreteriat has been fired on Monday in view of her alleged involvement in the scam. According to sources, even after glaring evidence of her involvement she was not questioned by the investigators along with 25 others at Kahilipara last week. Same fate awaits many other officers who allegedly ensured selection by bribing chairman Rakesh Paul who along with eleven others have been jailed.
